Advice on electronic ear muffs

I'm thinking of buying a pair of electronic ear muffs to use on the pistol range. In one catalog I find a variety of brands and prices that seem to range in the $100 - $160 area. Would appreciate suggestions on which brands are best and what features I should look for, etc.

    Hi. I have had good luck with the Peltor tactical 6S. I use the behind the head earmuff. Works great. I can hear my shooing partner talk, but it blocks the sound of the shot. ( Know 4 other shooters that use them too) Not cheap, but good.

    Be sure to get stereo and find a brand that has some kind of wind protection. I have a very early set and I can't use them outside when the wind is blowing because of the air movement across the pickups drowns out everything else. Most are designed to be used to enhance sound also, I have a remote pickup that plugs into the ear cup on one side for detecting sound at a distance, so wind can be a problem. I have tried putting foam over them but it really doesn't help much. Otherwise they are great, especially if you shoot any competition where you are very far from the range officer.

    I have a set of Pro Ears Predators. They work great but clamp too tightly around my head, give me a head ache. I tried straightening them out some, but the metal has a darn good memory, so I haven't solved it yet.

    Roysha: what brand earmuffs do you have? Do all new electronic earmuffs now come with wind filtering features, or should I specifically look for that? Also, what did you pay for your earmuffs?

    i have a pair of radians ,they retail for 90 plus ,but if you know someone who has a zanders acount ,the cost is 54

    jazzman..... I teach firearms at a police academy and have used the Peltor Tac 7 for a long time. They are very comfortable, and thats important as I wear them for 8+ hours a day. I bought a second set as my original ones are almost worn out.

    For behind the head, when wearing a boonie type hat, I use the Tac 6. The decibel reduction is better with the Tac 7, however. There are a lot of good electronic muffs out there. Go try some on and pick a pair that is comfortable.

    I use the Howard Leight Leightning powered by Pro Ears and like them a lot. These use a digital compression of the sound and not just 'clipping' the sound like a set of bad speakers. A bit on the pricey side though and uses the less common N size batteries.

    Peltors rock. Stay away from the big-eared Silencios (the ones that are twice as thick as everything else and only have volume control on one side). They're crap...very prone to breakage, and bulky to the point of being annoying. Can't be used with rifles or shotguns either.

    Thanks guys--especially Laredo Lefty. A guy at my club was supposed to bring in a set of electronic earmuffs that several guys there swore by but I never caught the name. I went to the club yesterday and he had brought in a set of Peltor 7s. So, thanks to the information this site provided, I decided to go with them. I paid $140 net, which I didn't think was a bad price. I put them on for just a few minutes before I left and they seemed to work fine.

    jazzman111: First I want to apologize for this late response. I've not been at the computer for a few days. I'm glad you found some you like. I'm sure most all of the companys have addressed the wind noise but it was something I wanted you to be aware of. I can't really remember what I paid for mine but I think it was around $100+/- quite a few years ago. They are Silencio RSX 87. The behind the head feature was not available when I purchased them, and since my ususal headgear is a Resistol cowboy hat, I either shoot bare headed or wear a beret. I detest baseball caps! Despite what mpolans says, I have used these in NRA Highpower and ATA trap with no problems. Other that the wind problem, I don't like the way the switches are mounted since they stick out a ways and I suppose, if one were klutzy enough, they could be broken off.
