A pump shotgun with an 18" barrel. Pick your guage, maker and model#. I would have a Mossberg 590 in 12 ga marine coat, simply because it can be neglected and abused and still won't rust.

If shes not already had it a Safety course on firearms 1st...... then id recommend a shotgun with an 18'' barrel in 12 or 20ga pump shotgun which everone she feels comftorable using. any brand you/she perfers with a short barrel.

Pump shotgun, 18" barrel, cylinder or spreader choke, loaded with 00 buck shot.
Don't get a .410, though. If you're gonna go through the hassle of fixing holes punched in the walls and cleaning blood out of the carpet, you might as well make it worth your while.

Local LEO and other experts tell me #4 shot is better. Just as lethal but with less chance of over-penetration and collateral injury. But for sure, the 12 or 20 gauge, and I affirm the Mossberg 500 Marinecote. There's one under my bed just waiting for a thug. I keep it in a "gunsock" so it stays dust free, yet it can be operated/fired while still in the sock. 0 -
My wife is scared to death of pistols so that's out. I got a youth model Winchester 20 gauge pump, and have thus far been able to persuade her to shoot four or five rounds a week through it as a familiarization drill. She's not crazy about it but I've convinced her that practice is very important so she does it.
I've made basically a safe room out of a back bedroom. It has a deadbolt, a cellphone, and the shotgun. Her instructions are to lock herself in there, rack the slide, call 911, and don't leave the room 'til a cop tells her it's OK.

At indoor range, choke make no difference. There's no time for a pattern to spread out anyway. Good advice about using finer shot. I actually use #6, myself. No matter what you use, you will leave a large hole in what you shot at. Even blank shotgun shells can kill at indoor range.

You have good advice here. M_C had the first rule. Get training either from you or a program. I assume you have been around weapons for some time. I have the same as RB. My wife, being a slightly built woman has a 500 in 410. Yes, it a small ga, but if she is afraid to shoot it, it makes no difference what the ga is. Both Mossbergs have the stock removed and the pistol grip. Even with a short barrel you can't manuver a full stock long gun in a hallway. I have gone with #7 shot. Hope we never have to use them. Not to repeat myself but get her to the range.

Hello "range"[:)]
1. Make sure that she gets training at the range with a shotgun, preferably a pumpgun. Find out what gauge she can handle, go with the biggest gauge she can manage well.
2. Short, legal barrel, 18 inches or a grunt over. Most manufacturers make them 18-&1/4 to 1/2 to be sure that the BATF is happy.
3. If she may have to use it in a confined hallway --- go with the pistol grip. In my case, I have no confined hallways to contend with so a regular stock is fine.
4. NO BUCKSHOT or SLUGS. To find out which shot size to use, go buy a sheet of the cheepest panneling you can find at Lowe's, Home Depot, Scotty's or whatever you have nearby. If you ask, they may have some that is all scratched and dinged up that they can't sell. They will be glad to sell it to you at a most reasonable price. Don't fool with wallboard---too heavy and breaks too easily. Put up two 2x4's in the ground and attach the panneling to it --- horizontal preferably to vertical. Divide it off into 3 equal sections with masking tape. Measure the distance from where she keeps the gun to her bedroom door ---- which is the distance she is most likely to have to used it. Get that distance away from the panneling and try #4's, #6's, and #8's. Which ever one cuts the SMALLEST hole is the one she should use. That means the shot charge is going to tear tissue to absolute shreads and inflict maximum damage.
5. Since children are around
safety is an absolute MUST. She can't keep a live round up the barrel. All a child has to do is click off the safety and pull the trigger and it will go BOOM and perhaps with disasterous consequences. That means she is going to have to practice racking the slide and clicking off the safety at the range with the muzzle in a safe direction or use "snap-caps" at home to practice with.
6. Making the assumption that it has hit the fan, and she has to use the shotgun on an intruder, go for the center of mass in the chest. If they don't go down like a stone, they may have on body armor. Some will tell you to go for the head on the second shot. My advise is to go for the pelvis. If you smash the pelvis, they will drop and can't advance towards her. Additionally, the shot charge will probably have cut through the bottom of the aorta and/or the internal iliac arteries. They are going to go unconscious in 15-20 seconds and bleed out in a minute. Until they go unconscious, the intruder can return fire and take her out. Put them down ---- then move away from where she was. Go over the bed, around the footboard, but MOVE away from where she was.
7. Get to the phone and dial 911. Tell the dispatcher that she will not put the shotgun down until the responding officer tells her to. The intruder may have a partner. Putting that shotgun down before the officer tells her to may get her killed by the intruder's partner.
8. Hopefully she will never have to do anything with the shotgun except practice on a regular basis and keep it clean and keep the magazine loaded.

I agree with everything on here except for one point. Spend a little extra and get the Remington 870. It's the most reliable shotgun ever made. It may cost more,but how much is your life worth? 0 -
I am going to break away from the crowd and recomend a pistol caliber carbine, more precise shot placement easy to control and Deadly.
