S&W Model's 17 & 18
Would someone please tell me what are the differences between the Model 17 and Model 18? I've seen a partridge front sight and target grips on the Model 17 and other than those two items I don't know what the differences are. Also, will Model 17 target grips fit on Model 18?
Bottom line: Is there anything that makes one model, either the 17 or 18, more desirable than the other. Thanks in advance.

# 18 is mat finish, #17 is high polish.

Woodrow....... Welcome to the forums.
Both the 17 & 18 have blued finishes. The 17 has a Patridge type front sight, a 6" barrel although there were a few 5"s made. It also came in nickel, but those are scarce.
The model 18 is a 4" with a Baughman combat type front sight. The 18, I dont believe, was offered in nickel.
Yes, the grips are interchangeable since both models are built on the "K" frame. I have one of each in my collection, and yes they are very similar guns and desirable to smith collectors like myself.
There are some other minor cosmetic differences between the 2 models, but for the most part they are almost twins, the most obvious difference being the 2" difference in the barrels.

My understanding is that their was a run of # 17's made with 4" barrels.
Given the above, the only sure way to tell them apart would be the front sight configurations, i.e. Partridge for the # 17, Tapered Ramp for the # 18.

So would the value of both guns in the same condition be about the same and what would be an average price for each of them? I have a chance to buy either model and both are in excellent condition. Model 17 is a 6", both have same target triggers and hammers. I'm leaning toward the Model 18 because of the tapered ramp front sight. Now if I just had more money...0 -

There's ( 2 ) on line gun auctions and ( 1 ) brokerage that you can check for the fair market value on the 17's, chances are, if all things were equal, the 18's would go for slightly less money.
I personally, was always partial to the 18, since they been out of production for almost 20 years now, if I could score one in crispy condition, that's where my money would go.0 -

I have a model 17 with a 4" barrel and a ramp front sight. Putting it next to a Model 18, the only difference is that the 18 has a tapered barrel like the Model 15 in .38 Spl. The 17 has a heavier barrel, almost like a model 19, but without the shrouded ejector rod. Very nice gun with a great action.
