Large ring versus small ring Mauser
I have a GEW 98 Mauser in 8mm that I am thinking of restocking. What is the difference between a large ring versus a small ring Mauser for stock ordering? This Mauser is WWI vintage.

Try looking at our mauser page.

Here is another excellent reference from one of our posters, who provides data on the various Mauser dimensions.

A true large ring action has a longer space between the action screws. There are exceptions but they shouldn't matter as the GEW is a true large ring action and will need a large ring stock. If you have access to a small ring stock that you want to use you can some times re-cut the inletting to allow a one to drop into the other. I would not try this with any synthetic stock. With wood I would first assure myself that there is enough material to allow this and then epoxy bed the action to restore the stuctural integraty of the stock. 0
