I'm looking for a good home defense shotgun. Either i'm sure would be a good choice but what is the difference of the 500 and 590

    Remember to Smile!

Magazine capacity is larger on the 590.

    Remember Ruby Ridge.

Experience is the best teacher and usually charges accordingly.

Doesn't the 500 have only one action bar connecting the foregrip to the bolt? I know that the 590 has two. I have the issued 590A1c, dual action bars, speedfeed stock, ghost ring rear sights, tritium front sight, lengthened forcing cone, modified improved cylinder fixed choke, and NFA registered 14" bbl. At first, I thought that I was being cheated by not getting a Rem 870, Beretta 1201FP, Benelli M-1, etc. Now, after thousands of rounds,I prefer the 590 over any fighting scattergun ever made. We shoot trap with the 14" guns for practice and quarterly qualification. 80% hits required, or you are unemployed. Like Granny used to say "the proof is in the pudding."

The newer model 500's have the dual action bars. I don't know when the change occurred and come to think of it, I don't know for sure that all newer model 500's have 2 but both of mine do.

I believe that the 590 was the militarized version of the 500. It was bought originally by the U S military, with all the bells and whistles, i.e. bayonet lug, parkerized, shrouded barrel, high capacity mag, etc.

Essentially the same shotgun was later sold on the civilian market, with a option of a blued finish.

i own a 500A and I kinda wish i had got an 870 instead. the 500/590's are great but the 870's are more customizable.

The 590 with Speed Feed Stock, Ghost Ring Sights, and flash light forarm. Best damn home defence Shot gun for the Money hands down.

I like the speed feed stock to hold shells so I know where that at. I like ghost ring sights on anything, The flash light forarm is when you wake up and cant see real good yet, It also helps to blind anybody and identfies your target.

    In the immortal words of CJ RAMONE;

    Smoothbore scattergun,
you are the only one to cover me when I sleep, you cover me in my dreams, I carry a smoothbore scattergun; steal from me, there'll be no time to run, I got the bead on you, she fires true; take what you want and I'll do what I have to do!
Triple O buck's the shot for me; take you right off at the knees,
no need to bother the police; I've got my Mossberg 590!

I don't think any other shotgun would sound as good in a punk song!

The old 500's only had one Mossberg fixed this and now have two.I'm not sure what year they started it.

I don't approve of political jokes. I've seen too many of them get elected.

I agree they can be nice but its a double edged sword. it also gives the bad guy a good place to aim at. [:0]

My 500 20ga was bought in 1984 and it has twin action bars. I own about 4 or 5 400s and 500s and really like them alot...reliable, inexpensive, and cheap+easy to fix when they do break down.

Men, like bullets, go farthest when they are smoothest.
