muzzleloader......bullet or ball

I just picked up a Knight Wolverine in 50 cal and wondered if any one here has any suggestions for powder / projectile combos. I haven't been to the gunshop yet so I figured this was a good place to start.

    Hello most of the newer type guns shoot BULLETS best and olded style shoot PATCHED ROUND BALL for your best results we need to know RIFLEING TWIST SPEC. Karl

    I'm guessing that since it's a Knight, your twist is about 1:28 or so, which calls for sabots, conicals, maxi-balls, etc. I prefer using 223 gr aerotip power belts and 100 gr charge. I haven't sighted it in real well, but I'm hitting in a 6 inch circle at 100 yards (I was shooting 295 grain hollow points 6 inches below the same target before at 50 yards--AKA 12 inches below center). DON'T BUY PELLETS! Spend the extra money to get a flask and powder measure--you get 50% more powder for the money you would spend on pellets, not to mention loose powder allows you to customize your loads more--charges usually vary between about 80 and 125 grains, and one should make your rifle a tack-driver. Get Triple 7--it costs 50% more than Pyrodex, but won't corrode your barrel or smell like rotten eggs. My .50 cal is no longer allowed in the house because I shoot Pyrodex pellets (the first box I bought cause I didn't know any better), it takes forever to clean, and the house smells for days. Also, read your owner's manual at least 3 times before you try to load it. Pay special attention to your max charge capability--some rifles can take 150 grains of powder, some only 100--don't overcharge! Pick up a tube of Bore Butter, and use it often--it makes bullets slide down the barrel easier, prevents corrosion, reduces fouling, and helps accuracy.

    I like and use pyrodex pellets, but triple 7 is indeed a top choice, I'm just lazy. Definitely go with bullets, not round balls with this rifle, and like a centerfire you will have to try some different weights and configureations to sort out which your smokepole likes best. I tend to use Powerbelts as well, but like them heavier.

    I use 295 gr hollow point power belt bullets with mine and 100 grains of powder. I currently use pyrodex but I am considering 777 in the pellets. My thoughts on that are they are quicker and easier to load and carry. That is why I don't consider the economics of the price of loose powder compared to pellets. That combo above gets me 3 shot groups of about 1" at sixty yards out of my Winchester Apex.

    Thanks everyone, I am going to head up to the gun shop and pick up some 777 and Powerbelt bullets and put in a little range time. I'll be sure to post my best results.
