Hornady makes ammo and I think Remington is going to make ammo also. I just got a Savage HM2 in the shop today. According to the writers in Shooting times it is the most accurate rimfire ammo to date. If I were you, I would get one of each but if that is not an option, consider the price of the ammo. HM2 is about 2 dollars a box cheaper.

Dave, please take off your CAPS LOCK! It makes it harder to read and most people prefer everyone use all lowercase rather than all uppercase.
Chris gave the difference in specs, so I won't repeat. I am going to buy a Savage 93 stainless synthetic heavy barrel in .17 hmr. I at some point, will also get a mach 2 barrel for my .22lr 10/22. Personally, I think if you're going to buy one, get the HMR, if you're converting a rifle to one of these two, then just do whichever is easier (if you've got a .22 mag rifle then convert it to .17 HMR or if you've got a .22lr then convert it to .17 Mach 2).
That's my 2 cents worth anyway...

sorry about the caps to everyone. i didnt even notice they were on. does anyone know if the mach 2 or hmr have adjustable triggers? in not does anyone know of any mods you can do to them? 0 -
dave, There is no comparison on 17HM2 vs 17HMR other than the fact that both shoot 17 grain VMAX's! Range of the 17HMR is far superior to the 17HM2!!! What are you planning to use it for? If only planning to use the Mach 2 for plinking or small game(squirrels) at 60 yards or less...it will do the job. If planning on somewhat larger varmints at 100-150 yards (and will do a number on smaller ones too!!!) the 17HMR is the one to choose! CCI and Hornady both have loadings available for the HM2. I've been told that CCI actually manufactures the Hornady ammo for the HM2 but do not know that for sure. In the HMR, HORNADY, CCI, REMINGTON, FEDERAL all have 17 grain loadings available and HORNADY has a 20 grain XTP load available. No 17HMR rifle I've chronographed with any of the available 17 grain loadings hes been under 2650fps and the 20 grainers are clocking 2430 from a Marlin 17VS. The new MARLIN 917VS's as well as the 917MACH2 have Marlin's new T900 triggers which are better than the original 17VS triggers but the ones I've tested in the HMR's are better than the HM2's!!! Don't know why! Rifle Basix makes drop in triggers for the Marlins and the Savages for about $65.00 that are adjustable to some degree. I've shot the 17HM2's but not over the chronograph. However when a rimfire shoots sub 1" groups at 200 yards it's pretty astounding! That's what I've done with the 17HMR's!!!! If you hven't shot the HM2 yet, try trading it for the HMR!! I think you'll be more pleased in the long run!!! GHD 0
