I will soon be 21, and I'd like to buy a subgun. I really like the looks of the MP5K-PDW, and I like the closed-bolt design it uses.

I know that it is possible to mount a laser on the front of the gun. I'd like to know what range I could expect to get out of a laser or a scope. A web site I visited quotes the accurate range of around 160 yards with the stock extended. Isn't this a little farfetched for a gun with a 5.5 inch barrel?

Anybody have any good experience that might be useful? Is it worth taking out a loan for the $13,000?

    There's a finite number, due to the 1986 ban on production/importation. They will never go down in price. Only thing you will have to worry about is adverse legislation,i.e. Kerry and his A**.H***., Leftie Buddies.

    If you are looking for range you need to pick another caliber the 9mm is a pistol round and intended to be used at pistol ranges(0-100 yards). Having said that in daylight a laser is pretty usless beyond 10 yards because you cant see it. A red dot scope of some kind is the best type of optical sight for this type of squirtgun. The way class 3 transferable machineguns are going up in value the gun will be worth a lot more latter on than 13k plus intrest now and you will have a fun toy to play with.

    Fun toy, absolutely. But.....a fun toy for the wealthy. Taking out a loan for one is nuts; if you can't write out a check for it, then it's beyond your means. It's just a toy!

    Rufe-snow makes a good point. Just one case of misuse, or one term in office by an idiot, can easily lead to confiscation without compensation. If you can't just kiss off your investment without a second thought, you shouldn't buy one.

    Nmyers, can you please tell me when a legally purchased firearm was confiscated? If dsmith misuses it, or commits a felony then I could see it, but to my knowledge the federal government has never come knocking on peoples doors and taking their guns. If you think they are only toys for the rich, then you need a new job. Is a $18000 dollar Harley a toy only for the rich, or how about a $15000 boat. Dsmith, I would take out the loan (if you can get one for a gun). It is a true investment that you can have fun with on weekends.

    I have had some range time training with a few variants of the MP5 family. Great weapons and very fun. As far as spending 15K on one, that is entirely up to the person. I agree with Mooseyard, if you can, WHY NOT?! It's the same thing as someone spending 15K on a painting or a Rolex, except your toy can dump a 30 round mag in 3 seconds.

    As far as optics. Some type of dot optic will be your best bet. I would stick to AIMPOINT or Trijicon ACOG/Reflex. Forget the laser.

    Reaching out to 160yards with a 9mm Sub gun, MAYBE if you lob it. We were running drills out to 100 yards and the guys with MP5s were hurting. It may hit a target but stopping power is a different story.

    If I wasn't living in the Republic of CA I would find a way to get my hands on a MP5 also. One of the best close quater weapons in the world.

    Thanks for the replies everybody. I think I will try to get the loan. The guns won't be going down in price any time soon.

    If I own an MP5K that constantly goes up in value, I win. If the law gets repealed to allow registration of new machine guns, I win. Win-win situation.

    If you want it buy it, Remember this is not a "Toy" This is a high dollar machine gun that kill something fast!

    If they ever start confiscating them , It would be the best time to have one!

    If I do a lot of shooting with an MP5, say a couple mag dumps every time I take it out, do I have to worry about wearing anything out? Will I need to replace the barrel? I couldn't legally replace the receiver, so I'm hoping I can't really wear that out.

    The firing pin and some springs would be the most likely to wear out. As long as it is a good one, you will have to shoot it a LOT for anything to wear out or break. If you can find one, pick up a "kit" for these items.

    If Kerry and his ilk get into office and ban possession of those Naughty Machine Guns, you lose BIG TIME. On the other hand they might have a Buy Back and offer you $100, to cover your costs.

    50-75 yards is probably going to be that maximum distance that you'll be able to shoot such a gun accurately. Being that its only a 9mm there probably wouldnt be very much energy left to do any kind of damage past 75 yards.
