shotgun barrel cutdown

say I wanted to cut down a 28" barrel on my 12 gauge (Remington 870 Wingmaster) to about 18". I know the legal limit, and Im not concerned with passing into the AOW zone, so does anyone know what kind of tools I should use, and a method for going about it?

    yup sure do.... sell your 28'' barrel on auction and /or then buy a 870 barrel in 18 or 20 inches your choice from http://simmonsguns.com/html/sales.htm for 35.00 bucks. im sure the 28'' barrel would bring more than that.....

    I'm with Mauser_central on this. Why ruin a good barrel? If it has a Vent rib and/or screw in chokes it will bring more than a short barrel will, or just buy the shorty and have 2 barrels!

    well, its not necessarily ruining the barrel, its on an old shotgun we dont use much anymore, so its more like a snake blaster than anything else...

    Use a hacksaw just put it in a vice to keep the cut at a 90 degree angle.

    I don't approve of political jokes. I've seen too many of them get elected.

    But, if you do cut it, be sure it is no less than 18 1/2"; there's no point in getting shot to death by a federal agent over a fraction of an inch.

    And don't forget to wrap that barrel in a nice cloth diaper or some such before biting it with the vise jaws...no point in buggering up a snake blaster.

    Have done this more than once. Measure the barrel length from the face of the bolt with the breech closed by inserting a cleaning rod, marking where it meets the end of the barrel. Subtract the amount you want to cut off and mark the barrel. Put masking tape around the barrel at the mark, ensuring the tape is on the side of the mark opposite the waste piece. Clamp the waste end of the barrel in the vise. Using a sawzall with a new metal cutting blade, make your cut as square as possible. It helps to have someone hold the gun while you do this, but it can be done by yourself. After cutting, take a half round file and clean up the end. Finish with some cold bluing. If you take your time, it will come out fine. Good luck.

    i have used a pipe cutter with very good results. the cut is always straight. take your time and don't try to cut too deep at once and you will get a good clean straight cut. dull sharp edge with half round file or sand paper obviously you need a round barrel for this. with a vent rib the above method is better

    calamity's right on with the pipe cutter.Just don't get in a hurry and put too much pressure as to distort the bbl.I've done several this way w/excellent results.Goin' a little over 18" aint' a bad idea either.[;)]

    If you just got to do it, Use Calamity's method, but wrap some tape around the barrel so the cutter rollers don't mar the blue. Use a wood dowel with some 240 grit emery paper to clean the burr from the muzzel.
