Dads BDay -C.Hathcock's model70

Guys,
My dad is a big time Carlos Hathcock fan and his birthday is coming up. He isnt into firearms as much as I am and most of the rifles he owns are either for me or are for hunting. I want to get him a rifle that is as close to the rifle that hathcock was using in his first tour. I think it was a model 70 winchester, 30-06 with a unertl scope? Anyone have any ideas? What do ya'll think abou the model 70? I dont know alot about sporter/target rifles, im more into the *gasp* cooler stuff!!

    i personally like the model 70 better than remingtons 700. I think your Dad would ''dig it'' myself.

    I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be damn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble.

    I'm not sure the specifics of GySgt Hathcock's rifles, but since they would have been USMC, I'm guessing that they were probably the same as was used in the units that I was involved with. There were three types issued to snipers that I knew. 1 was an accurized M-14, fitted with a starlight scope. #2 was a Rem M700 heavy barrel in 308 (7.62) fitted with a Redfield 3-9x scope. Remington had a special edition awhile back of this one, called the White Feather, in honor of Hathcock. #3 was an ancient Win M70 heavy barrel in 30-06. The one I saw had previously been equipped with a Unertl type scope, since it showed the effects of the bases, but when we used it, it had a Redfield scope with bases mounted in standard position on the bridge and ring. Of the three I liked the M70 best, the M-14 worst, primarily because the big heavy starlight scope was mounted slightly to the left side of the action, so disturbed the balance, making it difficult to shoot quickly, but for laying in prone, shooting at someone walking along in the middle of the night, it worked great.

    Email someone at NRA HQ to ask Jim Land (NRA Secretary). He worked very closely with Hathcock back in Vietnam. IIRC, he set up the whole scout/sniper school back then.
