How 2 Remove Recoil Pad On Remington?

I recently bought a remington model 700 Classic Limited Edition in 8 mm Mauser. After taking it to the range to sight in the scope, I came home with a black and blue shoulder and some pain. so I ordered a good quality aftermarket recoil paid. But my question is this: Even after I remove the two screws holding the Remington recoil pad on, the pad will not budge. Should I take a razor blade and drive it between the wooden stock and the black plastic base plate of the Remington recoil pad to seperate the pad from the stock? Or is there a better way?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    fox, This a wood stock? The finish is applied with the pad in place. so, take a razor blade and run it around where the pad and stock join. This won't release it, it keeps the finish from chipping when it does come loose. Wrap some masking tape around the stock close as possible to the pad(in case you miss)and tap from side to side with a plastic or rubber mallet. You did remove "two" screws from the pad right?

    Trapp55: your advice makes a lot of sense. I will try it and yes I did/will remove the two screws. Will report back to you about results. Thanks very much for your advice. Hope I can help you sometime but I don't have all that much knowledge to share but I am learning.

    If Trap55 info does not work for some unknown reason, try screwing in a couple of larger screws in to the plastic butt plate, just far enough to grab the plastic, but not the wood. There should be a little space between the plastic and the wood. After scoring around the stock, like trapp55 suggested, grab the screws with a pair of pliers, and work carefully back and forth, to try and leverage off the butt plate. Between these two suggestions, one of them will work, for sure.
