Ricochet Info?
Does anybody know of any general information of ricochets. I'm thinking of making a personal range and would like to know, for instance, is there any genaral correspondence between angular deflection and velocity loss, etc.
I have some construction a mile or so away generally down range and would like to have some idea of the angle off sight line vs. range from ricochets.

Hmm, Ricochets. Will you be shooting any steel on your range? I am assuming that your background will probably some type of dirt mound. A round going over your bullet stop would probably be more of a concern if you have construction only a mile down range.

What calibers will you be firing? Heavy rifles? Hot loads in heavy hand guns. And again as stated by ContacFront, will you be firing at steel? Another point, does your range have a downward slope from firing line to target impact or is it a level area? 0 -
any deflection results in an energy loss (transfer), the more defection the greater the loss. 0 -
Area is basically level but with a slight dip in front of the backstop (dirt mound) maybe a couple of feet deep. I'll dig out in front to lower target to slightly below ground level.
Primary round is 7.62x39 Wolf. Some 2.43, 6.5-06, 9mm, 22rf, .357mag.
I'm not really worried about me missing the backstop, but I have a grandson who's a little wild sometimes. When he shoots my Yugo SKS, it's in single-round mode.
I might have a steel flipover target for the .22 and handguns.0 -
When tests were done in Houston Tx,about '80 by the police the out come was surprising.
A bullet fired in the street in a downward angle at almost any angle between 90 and 45 degrees resulted in the same results. The bullet would pick up to about 3 to 5 inches off the ground and travel in a straight line. Nice to remember in a street shoot out.[}:)]0 -
If you have any 'official' plans, I'm sure I am not the only one that would like to have a look for our information. I plan on expanding my area for shooting at home (before the town moves in around me).

I am sure no one here doubts your shooting skills but we all know how Murphy's Law works. Especially if you are planning to fire rifle rounds. How high is your back stop (dirt mound)? Do you also have dirt mounds running along both sides of your range?
Pistol on steel targets are not so bad. I do a lot of defensive pistol and shotgun training with steel and I find that when you use real heavy harden steel plates such as 1/2" or 5/8" thick, the plates will just flatten the bullet right out and they usually drop a few feet in front of the target. Just make sure the steel you are shooting at is in good condition, flat and not ripped up with rifle rounds. I shoot as close as 5 yards on steel with pistol rounds. (No magnum loads such as 357 and 44 mag)
Rifle on steel is a whole new ball game. Unless your round is punching right through the steel plate you will get some ricochets that may and can travel out of our range.
Good Luck with the range. And may I ask where you are from to have a place that would allow a private citizen to have his own range? I am in the Republic of CA and even if I could afford the land, I am sure the county would laugh in my face if I wanted a private range.0 -
Have you tried contacting the NRA? They have tons of range building plans and good info to share.
Also, take a look at rangeinfo.org. It's a good online spot for design and construction information.

I manage about 70 ranges for the Army. Surface & vertical hazard area management is a daily exercise. The SDZ (surface danger zone) for a particular round is figured on a graphic layout that provides the footprint for round containment down to a 1 in 1,000,000 escape potential. Department of the Army Pamphlet 385-22 provides this data for direct fire weapons from small arms through 120mm main gun tank. I can send you the data you can use to develop the footprint if you provide a mailing address.. way too much data to try and send email..
