.17/carbine
Does anyone have any experience with the .30 carbine case necked to .17? I am considering that for a future project and would appreciate hearing of any personal experience.

There were several wildcats created for the M1 carbine, but most never caught on. All of these projects required custom made dies.
The only one that is still reasonable to do today is the 5.7 mm Johnson, & that's because Sarco has barrels in this caliber. You may want to check with them; I don't know if they have the dies, but there are a few folks out there who shoot this cartridge.

I have a 5.7 mm Johnson and am very happy with it. Thought the .17 might be an interesting project. And yes, I am well acquainted with custom reamers and dies as I am currently loading for five wildcats. Anyone else with any thoughts on the .17/carbine. 0 -

I think the description that gets used the most is "performs all out of proportion to its size". Being very similar to the 17 Ackley Hornet and the slightly larger 17 Mach IV, this little cartridge does what the bigger versions do but with less powder. It is extremely economical to shoot. Velocities are high in comparison to the powder used.
The antithesis to its economy is the case making, which you are basically familiar with from the 5.7 MMJ. I did it once and I don't feel the need to do it again. The 17 AH and the 17 Mach IV are much more simple (less labor intensive) for similar and better performance. Just a personal opinion.
It is an interesting project and relatively easy to load for. With the renewed interest in sub-caliber cartridges, there is an increased availability of high quality bullets for the 17's including a couple of custom makers. The powder manufacturers have also responded to the need for high quality, (faster/cleaner) small cartridge powders.
You might want to check on a couple of other boards that specialize in the sub-calibers.
