Skeet and Trap -What chokes do I use
Hello finally I am getting to trap and skeet and like it allot. I have 12 ga Beretta White wing and was wondering which chokes do I Use and especially in skeet which choke should go to which barrel (top/ bottom)
Also lot of times I would switch to a round of trap if the like for skeet is too long. is it good idea to invest in good extended chokes.
Reason I am asking is that I saw a fellow shooter on the range switching from skeet to trap with few twists of his hand (using sort of chokes that did not need a key).
So bottom line is which are good or which kind should I use for
Skeet
Trap

Sounds like the guy you saw was using a spinner wrench, it still uses the key slots but the handle makes the job quicker (sporting clays shooters love them).
For skeet, anything from Cylinder to Imp Cyl in both barrels will do (I ran skeet/skeet, my wife ran Cyl/Cyl) stick with #9 shot. For 16yd singles trap, Mod or Imp Mod in the bottom barrel (only one you will use) with #8 shot works well, as you move back to the 27yd line you'll shift to Full and #7 1/2 shot (figgure Imp Mod and #7 1/2 at around the 21yd line).
I never shot Doubles trap, but Full/Mod with #7 1/2 shot would be my guess as to a good place to start off.
If you haven't already figgured it out, fire the bottom barrel first, as it produces less muzzle climb to recover from
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
In trap, might take into consideration of what yard line your shooting from.. If your shooting what they call handicap here, full choke is the way to go, up close, Mod, or imp cyl, will suffice.. 0 -
I agree with Tailgunner. Use "skeet" for "skeet" and "Mod" for 16 yd trap. I have never found that 2 different chokes were of any benefit on the skeet range, much more work then it's worth. #8's are good for all around (as long as you are not shooting competition). The Extended chokes do not pattern any better then the type that need a wrench (my opinion)and they don't "strip the wad" better, but you don't need a wrench to change them out. The other advantage of extended is that there's less chance of "nicking" the barrel end since you don't need a wrench. On the other hand, standard are less expensive and it only takes a moment longer to change them (I never thought extended were worth the money except for my wife, she just can't get this "wrench thing")
Enjoy the sport, if extended makes you feel better, they're not much more of a cost in total context.0 -

the advice you got is sound, but allow me to ask what your skill level is? it will effect my suggestion to you and get you some more broken targets faster.

I shoot IC and cylinder for skeet, MOD for trap. I don't think barrel selection matters much. I prefer to shoot top barrel first, just cause it seems to heat up more slowly in my hands that way. Whether it does or not, I dunno, but it seems to be that way.

As far as my skill level.
Trap wise I had been shooting since spring and haven't gone below 20 most of time 20 or 23.
Skeet wise last week was my first time and boy it's fun. I haven't change the chokes from trap to skeet and when I shoot skeet I had trouble breaking some of the close-flying clays.0 -
no choke necessary for skeet if you can find some cylinder chokes 0 -
if you like to hit your birds in trap right out of the house, use mod on 16yd line. stick to full on handicap. use #8's on 16yd and stay with #7 1/2 shot on handicap. if you dont switch chokes when you go to the skeet range with your trap chokes, youre choking your shots. the ideal hitting point in skeet is that pole in the middle of the field. its 21 yds anywhere on the course. use i/c if you have slow reactions and tend to shoot past the the pole. use skeet or cyl if you shoot them right out of the house. use the same chokes up top and down on bottom in your gun. #8's or #9's will be fine in skeet. until you get good, stick with 1 1/8oz loads to give you 655 pellets flying after your bird. it drops to 525 when you go to 1oz or #8's. you need all you can get. stay high and take that recoil like a man! have a great time!
