6-shot .40cal Percussion Pepperbox...
What would a Percussion Pepperbox in approx. cal .40 be worth.
It says "J.C.Reilly New Oxford Street Londond" on the one side and "Improved Revolving Pistol" on the other side.
Serial number is 1278 and approximately from the year 1850.
Pressure-test stamps on each barrel - no rifling in the barrels whatsoever.
Grip and bascule in a copper-alloy of some sort.
Grips are made of wallnut.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

I don't know how much this is going to help you? Flayderman shows a American made Pepperbox ( Marston ) of very similar construction. Although the caliber is given as 31. He values them between $300 & $775, depending on condition. Believe the material used to make the frame/receiver is an alloy known as German Silver. 0 -

On Belgian gunshows, those British made pepperboxes are available for prices between _ 400 and _ 500, depending on their condition. Yours seems to be lightely pitted on the barrel cluster, and the nipples heads have been somewhat damaged by someone who tried the action without any caps on them (You should NEVER allow that - to avoid damaging the nipples on a "double-action only" gun, always put fired or plastic caps on them for protection).
The barrel cluster should also be tight, so that the nipples align correctly under the hammer head. Many of these ppboxes have loose barrels.
American pepperboxes (Allen & Wheelock & others) and Belgian pepperboxes (ring-trigger Mariette) are always higher priced in Belgium than British and French Lefaucheux ones. Don't ask me why.
Judging by the pictures, i guess yours could find a buyer around _ 425-430 in Belgium.

Some interesting information For You....Joseph Charles Reilly first appeared as a jeweller at #12 Middle Row, Holborn, in 1816.
By 1835 he had become a gunmaker at 316 High Holborn where he remained until 1847. His son, Edward Michael Reilly became his father's partner at the new premises, 502 Oxford Street, first occupied around 1848. A shop at RUE SCRIBE, PARIS, is recorded in 1882 and 1884, but not for the year 1893. The name became Reilly & Company around 1860 and was already known as E.M. Reilly & Co. by 1882...As for value....It seems that this has been addressed prior to my Posting and seems to be about right considering the Condition......Best....

You,of course,can do what you feel best,however I think that the price that was quoted ($525-$550 U.S.) is a little on the high side. Earlier this year I bought a .40 caliber Allen&Thurber, with the 6 inch "Dragoon" barrels and in about the same condition as the one you show, for $400 U.S. and was the only one to show any interest in it.0 -

There's not much interest for those kind of guns here in Denmark, but I just happened to stumble over an auction for one.
I think they're nice conversationpieces and they look odd enough with the 6 barrels - and not a drum and one barrel. =o)
It doesn't hold great interest for me either, but it seems it's been hit with a slightly higher prize than I would pay anyways.
I know there's a slight difference in availability from the US and to here - that also affects the prices.
But so far it's estimated at 1200US $, the bid is just about 730US$.
I'm out.. =o)
