410 shotgun firing rifle bullets!
I have a Mossberg Model 173YA-3inch:
I have always heard stories of being able to fire (safely)
a certain type/caliber bullet in a 410; is this true?

Sounds kind dangerous to me, specially with jacketed bullets. Not saying it could not be done though. But with rifled slugs avaiable
(soft lead) sounds better to me.0 -
You can fire a 30-30 round of a .410, I would do this only if I needed to. The barrel has no rifling so it's not very accurate. 0 -

I beleive the round you're probably thinking of is the .45 Colt. There's a number of small camping/survival guns out there (like the H&R "Survivor" See Link http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=6&subcat=5#16) that are chambered for .410/.45 Colt. I don't know if you can "safely" fire the .45 Colt out of all .410's though. Either way -- as stated above -- I would expect accuracy to be poor without the barrel being rifled. My guess would be that you'd probably do better to get some .410 rifled slugs. 0 -
I've also heard of using the 45Colt in a 410 but I would only try it using a softer lead bullet as is used in Cowboy action shooting types of ammo. I wouldn't want to try a jacketed bullet. The thought of loosing half my face does not appeal to me. Why not just use 410 slugs? You'd probably get better accuracy with a forster-style slug out of a smoothbore anyway!

You should never fire ammunition not designed or intended for the gun you are using with the possible exception of a survival situation.
There are guns that are intended to chamber either .45 LC or .410, however these guns are not choked. You could run into a big problem attempting to fire a .45 LC through a full choke .410.
I have never heard of using a 30-30 round in a .410, but I suppose if it will chamber it could be done but I emphasize again, you should always use ammunition designed and intended for the gun you are shooting. Doing otherwise is asking for trouble.

I would be seriously concerned about generating pressures to high for a shotgun barrel with a pistol cartridge. 0 -
I would think that firing a 30-30 in a .410bore would result in split cases to say the least; that long bottleneck, the taper, all that sounds like it's a dumb idea.
I never can figure out why in the world someone would want to fire ammo of a similar size casehead/diameter in a gun not SPECIFICALLY MARKED for that caliber. Why not just get some water pipe and plug one end with mud, and stuff the other end with blackpowder and a rock? I mean, if you're dumb enough to risk personal injury on top of ruining your gun; maybe you should rethink that whole "I want a gun" thing.

saint2271, Do not fire any of the mentioned rounds from your gun.
the reason being that the H&R guns that shoot the .45LC are noticably more reinforced than your pump action around the chamber, so they can handle the pressure of those rounds but yours can't.
So unless you buy a breakover single shot, please do not try this combo. You or someone you care about may be seriously injured or killed. Please hear my advise and BE SAFE!!!
