M1 garand question

I know that there are narrow base and wide base gas
cylinders for M1 Garands.. I have been told that a
M1 Garand (manufactured around 1944) should have a wide base
cylinder... My question is, will a narrow base fit the
rifle? there seems to be more narrow base cylinders up for
auction then wide base...

    A local person wants me to list his M1 Garand here on Gunbroker. He says that it was a rifle specifically made for match shooting at Camp Perry and not a rifle meant to be issued to troops. He says that the receiver has some stars on one side that show that this rifle was built for matches. I will get some photos and more information in the next few days, just wondering if anyone heard of these purpose built rifles with stars on the receiver?

    It's been too many years since handling the M-1 so can't help you much on the premature ejection. Take a look at the spring under the manual clip eject latch. Replace it and try. If it still ejects early replace the clip latch. It could also be gooped up from hardened cosmoline so take it apart and clean parts and recesses before anything.
    The M81 scope is a variant of the Lyman Alaskan so I'd suspect the optics may be interchangeable and anyone equipped to repair those scopes may be able to help you.

    Both the M1C & M1D were always assembled from parts, so it would not be accurate to say that they have matching mfg. parts. However, they should be "correct" for the time that they were assembled.

    It's difficult to trouble shoot malfunctions on a forum. You could try checking all small parts for wear, breakage, or bending; pay special attention to the follower arm & clip latch. Since your M1C is probably worth > $6,000, you should only entrust it to an EXPERT for repair, if you can't figure it out for yourself.

    This is not an unusual problem with these over half century old rifles and a fairly common cause is a weak clip latch spring. Easy to troubleshoot, though.

    Do this - remove the clip latch and stretch the spring out, reassemble the rifle and try it. If this cures the problem it's a temporary fix at best; replace the clip latch spring with a new one. I'd try this first. If it doesn't cure the problem then do the parts swap that Jim speaks of. Good luck.
