What are they worth? 1866, Merwin Hulbert

I have the opportunity to buy 2 guns...

1) Winchester 1866 (very early) serial number 12879, in poor-fair condition. Brtass has been polished, barrel markings are completely worn off, heavy patina on all metal parts.

2) Merwin hulbert, 7 1/2 inch barrel in 80%+ nickle condition.

What are they worth? I'd like to post pictures here, but I dont know how, can you please let me know. Thank you

    A few days ago a Merwin Hulbert maybe a little better than you describe went for nearly $2400 on auction on GB. It was the model with the top strap over the cylinder, not the open top. Nickel plated and had very nice carved ivory grips and an extra barrel about 4".

    It's just a personal opinion, but I wouldn't buy the Winchester 66 at all if it is in the condition you describe. A gun that has been damaged by intensive use in the past - cf some that have been used and field-repaired by Indians - has still an historical value. A gun that has been "restored" by unskillful iconoclasts, is lost for ever.
    But again, this is only a personal opinion.

    Merwin Hulbert & Co. made quite a variety of revolvers. In order to give you any sort of value, we'd have to know which model you have, it's caliber, and condition.

    If you can give us a complete description of the gun....caliber, number of shots, barrel length, grip shape, finish, etc..... and list ALL of the writing on it, exactly as and where it appears (including all of the patent dates), we can probably determine which model you have, and an approximate value.

    The 1866 probably has not been refinished, except for the polished brass.

    The Merwin hulbert is:

    Open top, 7 1/2" in .44 MH.
    Barrel markings read:
    Side: The Harrington and Richardsons Arms Co. Norwich Conn. U.S.A.
    Top: Merwin Hulbert & Co. New York u.S.A Pat Jan 24, April 21 Dec 19 74, Aug 3 75, Juli 11 76, April 17 77, Pat's Mar 6 77.

    6 shot. Serial number: 6921 number on cylinder: 4236
    Grips: square but, checkered, some sort of hard rubber appears to imitate wood.

    Overall condition around 90% witout a doubt original

    ...... Better look again at the side barrel markings; should be Hopkins & Allen!
