Rem 870 Express Chokes Slugs and Deer

Ok, I did follow the GB Forum rule of actually searching for an answer in previous questions/answers.

Found some helpful stuff, but nothing to answer my specific question; so here we go:

I just bought a Remington 870 Express Super Mag 12 Gauge. It came with (what I assume is) a modified choke.

Problem: One of the areas I plan on killing Bambi's dad/mom this fall only allows shot (no slugs/rifles--too many neighbors, fear of stray bullets, blah blah blah).

Question 1: Can I use a full choke with 00 buck shot?

Question 2: Can I use an improved choke with slugs to kill Bambi's dad/mom in those areas where slugs are allowed?

Question 3: Which type of 12 gauge round, 00 shot or slug, is the most effective in ensuring Bambi's dad/mom is available for consumption at my dinner table?

    I can't answer to the buck shot, as it is not allowed here. I do know that there are some law enforcement type choke tubes made espec. for patterning buck but again, I have zero experience.
    Personally, I use saboted loads, which are quite accurate and effective. these are best in rifled barrels, but i remember an article where they tested both full rifled and rifles choke tube. The rifled choke tube that Remington makes was deemed nearly or as good as a full rifled barrel to 100 yds. Ammo and guns have changed since then, so may not be as true now.
    If you are going to use Foster type, then a cylinder tube would likely be best. Remington now has a new slug called Buckhammer. Might be worth looking at in smoothbore. You will have to target any of the above, as no two guns like the same ammo, and there are vast differences in slug ammo. It's not as exact as rifles, but it's a whole lot better quality and selection than even a few years ago.

    if you are not going to buy a barrel with sights on it then there is no reason to go with a rifled choke tube as you can't get a good enough sight picture just using the bead ,,,so since we're using just a regular field barrel , i would use the Imp. cyl choke with foster type slugs , buy several brands and see which shoot the best ,,, again with the OO buck you will want a fairly open choke to let those big boys thru without deforming to much start with your Imp.cyl choke, see what it does then try a mod choke tube ,, then last try your full choke tube ,, its all going to be a matter of shooting the different loads in your gun to see what it will do ,,,

    shoot it off of a brench if you have one and with the buckshot loads have a pretty large target to shoot at so you can see where the pellets go..

    a dog food stack cut open works well for this with a spot of paint for a aiming point , you may want to try like a #4 buck, which are a little smaller but has more pellets .... good luck and have lots of fun with your new gun

    I have lots of "mommy and daddys" in the freezer from using buck shot and a full or modified chock. The full chock may just kick a little harder , but who feels it at that moment. Just shot accurately and bring them home.

    Using the 00 buck I would stay with the modified choke and use 3" shells. ON the slugs buy and improved cylinder or cylinder choke for your gun, then get yourself various brands ( federal, remington ect ) regular slugs and see which brand shoots best in your gun. You also have the option to put a red dot scope . Happy hunting.

    Hello h4chthis: Those that have been on this forum for any lenght of time know that that shotguns are my "thing". It is still the most versitile firearm made.

    I have a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 with "rifeled" barrels "cementented" into the frames with Brownell's epoxy and powdered steel. The barrels absolutely can't move under recoil. Yes, the are dedicated shotguns and I absolutely have no intention of ever changing their barrels. I hunt costal marsh hogs in the "Big Bend" area of Florida --- formerly known as the "Sunshine State" but now know as the "plywood state".

    If you are allowed to use "slugs" ---- forget the "sabots" and go to www.dixieslugs.com. These things turn a shotgun that has a rifled barrel that does NOT move into a "Paradox Gun" I use crossbow scopes on them--others may think that is silly ---but each to his own. I can equal most lever guns in 45-70 at 100 yards and at 21-22bhn hardness I can shoot completely through a "BIG" costal marsh hog, end to end.

    We are not allowed to hunt "Black Bear" here anymore as there is a "temporary" ban on hunting them. "Temporary" being more than 10 years so far. I have no doubts that this slug would also shot end to end through a black bear.

    So if you have a "rifled" barrel for your shotgun you will not be able to find a more accurate or "powerful" slug on the market.

    Don't even think about putting buckshot through a "rifled" barrel shotgun. No -- it won't hurt the shotgun --- but you are going to be cleaning the barrel for the next 3 months to get the lead streaks out of the bsrrel.

    Something you may want to consider for buckshot. Last year I put a pattern Master ported choke on my 12 gage based on recommendations from several of my hunting buddies. This has got to be one of the most incredible pieces of shotgun hardware ever made. I used Winchester Supreme 3" magnum OO buck. I got three one-shot clean kills on deer at 40-60 yards. This choke works differently than the traditional restricting choke. It has minimal restriction but rather it grabs the wad or shot cup, slows it down and keeps the cup and gases from blowing through the shot. It produces the most incredible patters that I have ever seen. 15 OO 3" pellets within a 20" circle at 40 yards. I thought this might be just another gimic until I tried it. Cabelas carries this choke for your shotgun. You can get more information from Cabelas or Google search Patterm Master Chokes. Good luck. KT

    I have a Remington rifled choke tube on my 870 Express. Shooting plain old federal foster type slugs, it will shoot 2" groups at 50 yds. I put some of the clamp on rifle sights on the vent rib. They work pretty good. They have the fiber optic things in them. My gun shoots about 3 inches high left at 50 yds. I havent' tried anything else as far as choke tubes goes. I use this gun for 3 gun competition. I hunt deer with a rifle, simply because I can. Good luck.
