Remington 721 - safety firing?

I was researching my model 721 30-06 I bought a couple years ago.

I have seen somethings online that the thing can fire when the safety is released.

Is this a serious issue?

I have seen the reports where some kid shot his dad in the back of a Jeep while trying to unload...which seems like a "when you play with fire, you're gonna get burned" scenerio. I have never felt the need to unloaded in the back of a car. lol

I honestly don't know how you shoot yourself when practice proper good gun safety rules, but I guess it can happen.

So anyways...is this a real issue?

    Didn't that have to do with situations where some nimrod adjusted the trigger pull improperly?

    THE REM. 700 SERIES TRIGGERS CAN DO THIS IF THEY GET 'GUMMED UP' WITH DIRT/RUST/WD-40 ECT.

    Never EVER oil a rem 700 series rifle EVER. If it seeps into the trigger group it gums up the works and can cause all kinds of safety issues.

    If by "release" you're referring to the safety being "off", it stands to reason that if the trigger is pulled-accidentally or otherwise-the gun will fire. On The early 700 series, along with the 721's, you couldn't open the bolt with the safety on. So if you had a 721 or an ADL with a blind mag, the gun could only be emptied with the gun in firing ready position. My dad had an ADL in .280 and -safety freak that he was- it was always disconcertingly uncomfortable for him to unload that gun. I have a mountain rifle in .280 and the gun can be unloaded with the safety on. Dad's ADL(which I inherited) sits in the safe-unused and unloved except for the memories it brings about the good times hunting.

    I don't see how it can go forever without oiling it, but I assume if I know what I am doing then I should be fine.

    As for how it supposedly fires, I understand its when the safety is switched off that the firing pin is released. ?????

    Remington will fix this for $20, but as with my Bearcat, I am not to fond of vinage tinkering.

    my father has a REM 721...
    the were recalled a few years back over this "saftey" issue as part of the out of court settlement of a lawsuit...

    if you send the rifle back to REM they will "fix" the "problem" for free. there is a form and an explination on the REM website / hompage...
