new SKS

Hi there I got a new SKS rifle and I cannot get it to fire in semi mode will I have to disassemble the whole gun for a cleaning as it was covered in grease? or maybe its just a bad rifle but it shoots single shot just fine even when i do move the gas port shut off knob

  tear it down and clean it,you should have cleaned it before you fired it,I hope you at least made sure the barrel was not full of grease first,I have seen them with so much grease in the barrel you had to force a rod down it the first time just to break it loose.everyone has a dirfferent method for cleaning off the cosmo;I prefer diesel,cleans the grease but does not leave the metal dry.tear it all the way down,,put it in a bucket and scrub when you think its clean scrub it some more,even then when you shoot it enough to get it real hot more grease will run out.

  Follow the directions of the previous poster, I personally prefer Simple Green to Diesel as it's less toxic and flammable. Both will do the job though.
  
  If the gas valve is still stuck in the closed position after through cleaning you might consider getting some Kroil penetrating oil. It's carried by Midway & Brownells, etc. It has a very good reputation for freeing up frozen and stuck assemblies.

  If it is not the gas port then try the spring.If I remember correctly, the spring can be put in backwards which will make it single shot. It should have came with a manual. Maybe not

  When discussing an SKS, it is often helpful to state who made it. From your description of the grease, I assume that it is a Yugo. Detailed disassembly instructions can be found:

  And, yes, you must take it down to the last little bitty piece to get all the grease out.

  If it is a yugo there is a gass cutoff, this prevents the loading of another round into the chamber. there is a little nob like switch on the front of the gass tube. this single fire mode is for using the gernade laucher. i bet this is what your problem is, if the gun is clean. happpy shootin[8D]

  Make sure the thing has been completely dissassembled and cleaned before trying to get it to cycle. SKS's can slam fire and or full auto if the firing pin cavity in the bolt has any cosmo in it. You HAVE to remove the firing pin to get it clean. See the articles on surplusrifle.com.
  
  I assume you have a Yugo since that's what's available now. If not, ignore the rest of this post.
  
  If the gun is making no attempt to cycle, the gas valve is probably set to single shot.
  
  On the gas block at the front end of the gas tube is a button. If this button is straight up, it's in the single shot position. Depress it and move to the right about 45 degrees until it pops back up and locks.
  
  The gun should now cycle normally.
  
  The gas valve should also be cleaned. With the button in the upright position, depress it and slide it to the rear until it lines up with the cutout in the slot. Slowly release the button (it's spring-loaded) and pull it out. Then pull/pry the gas valve out of the block. There's probably a lot of cosmo in there (there was in mine). Clean it all up and reassemble.
