Long range guys

I have a Savage 110c (long) action chambered in .270, do you think it would be worthy of a 6.5x.284? or would that be to much work?

    I guess you have a start. You might check midwayusa.com for 110 rebarrel kits. For a serious long range rifle you should probably consult with a gunsmith like Gordy Gritters at Pella Ia.

    You can do a search using the terms 'Savage sniper rifle' and 'Savage long range rifle'. There is quite a bit of information out there. The above article is case and point, it's pretty interesting.

    Is it too much work? Only you can answer that question. It might take a little extra tweaking under the rails, at the ramp and on the follower to get the 6.5 x 284 to feed from the magazine or you can shoot it single shot. Other than that, it should be a straight forward project.

    The Savage can be a terrific and accurate rifle. But like all other accurate rifles, there is a 4 part system; the rifle parts, the gunsmith that puts it all together correctly with long range accuracy in mind and of course, the shooter and his ammunition. We all know that any of us can take a $4000.00 custom rifle and maybe not be able to hit the broad side of a barn. You have to put all of the parts of the system together and practice.

    The 6.5 x 284 is acknowledged as one of the leaders in long range accuracy. There is good brass, bullets and chamber reamers available already, no new ground to break. Even if you don't use it for long range target, you can certainly use it for one heck of a hunting rifle with appropriate bullets. Price out the project and see if it meets your needs.

    you would certainly have enough magazine for the 140gr class pills to be seated out to the lands and still feed. However,..if single shot is your plan,..then you may also wish to look at the 6.5-06AI or even the standard 6.5-06. I would go with a 1:8 twist so that you can launch the high BC pills. My 6.5-06AI is really liking the 140gr a-max's in her 26" PacNor 1:8 with rl22, H1000, 4831sc etc.

    If you were to locate one of their factory BVSS stocks,..that would reduce the cost and when bedded correctly would be an great platform.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
