Bert H.......Winchester Ballards
Bert....a question and a treat.....have you ever seen a Hiwall marked "38-55 Ballard" as a caliber marking rather than just "38-55"? Have a Winchester tool marked "38-55 Ballard" and wondered if there was a Hiwall out there marked to go with it.

OK... you now have my complete undivided attention[:p][:D]
First, those are very NICE high-walls... especially the thick-side framed rifle[^] (the loading tools & acoutrements aren't too shabby either[^]).
OK, now that I have the drool wiped off of my face[:D], to answer your question, no, I have not see the ONE listed example that was made/marked "38-55 Ballard". I have however, seen nine of them in 40-70 Ballard (including the one I own), and seven more in 40-90 Ballard.
It appears that your 40-70 is an early one (like mine), as it has the first style caliber stamp. Your 40-90 was made a bit later, as it has the second style caliber stamp.

Hello Dave...
Most of my Winnies are up in Washington... however, the good news is that I am leaving the coporate headquarters office in Anaheim on the 19th of this month to reopen a Field site office at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on the 25th of this month. Home-sweet-home![^].
After I get resettled, get the office opened up, and my life back to a dull roar, I will get my Winnies out of storage, and post some pictures.

TRAP55....thank you.....I like the Marlin-Ballards, but could easily drift in the direction of the Hiwalls without a lot of arm twisting. These are the only 2 Hiwalls I have and that because of the Ballard calibers.
Bert....looking for the letter on the 40-90. Put it in a "safe" place, but now don't know where that might be. I will find it. And yes, I am the one that contacted you about six months ago.

Max, I'm always looking at the shows and online for Sharps reloading tools. But the few rare times I've found anything as nice as yours, it came with a loan application!

TRAP55....only have 1 Sharps tool in my entire collection. Like to have a rifle to go with the tools and original Sharps rifles are....well let's just say my tax bracket is not quite high enough. [:)] Here's my only Sharps mold.
Bert....here is that odd item I promised. It's a factory bullet seater for 40-70 Ballard cartridges and I believe it's from the Winchester factory but can't prove that yet. Saw another bullet seater from the Winchester factory and it was very similar. Time will tell. The "78" is the tool room # and is on both parts of the seater. The small seater underneath is a Ballard seater.
Still looking for the letter....

Very nice looking tools[^] Thanks for the posting the photos. Those reloading tools are real hard to come by today, and they are not exactly cheap when found.

Max, we seem to have similar problems! Got this one given to me in return for repairing some others. No paper yet, but it was given to Bill Grinell from T. Roosevelt out his his own collection. It was a barreled action,two pieces of wood, and a coffee can full of rusted parts when I got it. Sights are my add ons, no I haven't done anything to ruin the value!

TRAP55....would never guess that one came out of a "coffee can". Nice work, really do like those old Sharps. Gotta go look for someone to give me one. [:D]
