ENCORE FOR MOUNTAIN LION
I HAVE BOUGHT A NEW ENCORE PISTOL AND WOULD LIKE SOME INSIGHT ON THE SMALLEST CAL. THAT WOULD WORK FOR A LION HUNT! I WILL BE LEAVING OCT. 31. I HAVE ORDERED A CUSTOM BARREL IN 7MM-08, WHICH IS MORE THAN ENOUGH GUN, BUT I AM TOLD IT WILL NOT BE HERE IN TIME. I WANT TO BUY A BARREL FOR ALL AROUND SHOOTING THAT WILL WORK ON LION. I HAVE KILLED DEER WITH 222, 223, AND 243 AND ITS WORKED FINE. I JUST DONT WANT TO GET ANYONE OR THE DOGS HURT DUE TO LACK OF GUN.

I've never hunted lions but from what i've read they are a very thin skined animal pretty easy to kill when tree,, if you where planing on the 7mm-08 there is not that much difference between it and the 243 ,, are you using a guide or outfitter? if so then i would ask them which would be the best,,,,, but for my money i would go with the 243....... of course this is just my .02 cents worth [:D][:D] have fun and good luck 0 -
I would personally go with something that has a little more frontal area. Accuracy at long ranges won't be of extreme concern as your shot will likely be relatively close. Ever think about 35 Remington for this task? What about the 30 Whisper that was designed with this pistol in mind? I tend to agree with the last poster as well that the 243 might suffice just fine.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I may be misreading your post, but I get the impression that your reference to taking deer w/ 222 .. etc. did not apply to your Encore as you stated that you just recently acquired it ... so I'll go with this impression.
You didn't state if you would be using the pistol or rifle configuration so I'll make another assumption that it will be pistol.
So, if you have a 7mm-08 on order that should fill the bill for most of your distance hunting needs, and of course with the right cartridge it will work fine in the "up close and personal" mode too. However, to add a barrel, rather than going down in caliber I would look to filling other possible uses, and that could include going after "large dangerous game" that will in all liklihood not be taken at any long distances ... thus look at what dealers in your area have in stock that are in "larger 40's", like the 454 ... where you can fire 45 colt as well. Then if you go after the big boys you've got something of substance.
If you still want to go down caliber 243 or 270 should readily fill the bill, but talk w/ your guide/outfitter, make sure they know what you intend to use. That way they can best be prepared to make your hunt both successful and safe to all concerned.

Took mine with a .41 Rem Mag in a Ruger 3-screw ss. The rancher that was along had a T/C Contender with a .223 Rem in a 10" bbl. Said he had taken several of the cats with it, but always at close range and treed.

think I'd get something bigger around to knock it away from me in case it was heading my way in a hurry - any of those will kill it, eventually - good shooting 0 -
Cat's don't come after people to much, We Stink. If'n your going to hunt them in Calif. get a bicycle and ride in the hill's they will come to you and you can get a close shot, 410 with a slug should do it.[8D][8D] 0
