I figure you guys like to talk about 1911s!

1. I've heard (but don't quite believe) that carrying a 1911 "cocked and locked" / condition one all the time wears out the springs. Is there any truth to that?

2. What's the best out of the box 1911 for bullseye target shooting? . . .Ok, then which ones are really good?

    3. What is the purpose of the serrations at the FRONT of the slide on late model .45s?

    Does anyone really use the hooked trigger guard anymore?

    All springs will wear out in time but the main spring is probably the last one to wear out. I change mine every 6,000 rounds and my recoil spring every 3,000 rounds. My 1911 is my bedroom gun so it is always in condition 1, cocked and locked. Sure a spring will wear over time, but you will be waiting a long time for a main spring to wear out in a 1911.

    2. Now what is the best 1911 out of the box? Kimber is my choice, and then you can get into the custom 1911 arena such as Wilson Combat and Les Baer.

    3. The front serrations on the front of new generation 1911s aide in press checking. Not so important when you are target shooting, but if you are doing any type of combat shooting such as IDPA, IPSC, or tactical firearm training, press checks should be a must. The serrations just give you a better grip.

    Hello the grooves on the front of slide are a must if you are going to mount a red dot scope with a "TUNNEL" /frame mount. As far as a match pistol goes . I have been shooting N.R.A. bullseye for 35 years .today most people start with CASPIAN frame and slide or ROCK RIVER "not rock island" or a colt series 70 then install a Kart or BARSTOW barrel . There are a few MASTER PistolSmiths but they have a 1 year or longer wait Les BAER also make a very good pistol I have a like new I got for a backup that I will sell . If you buy a used match pistol INSIST on a chance to test on a RANSOM REST. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN" by the way grooves on the front of slide are not legal in a C.M.P. HARDBALL MATCH

    Well, just FYI, the front serrations aren't a "late model" thing. They actually predate the M1911, and first appeared on the Model 1900 .38 Automatic Colt Pistol......the grandfather of the 1911.

    Front serrations were also incorporated on the 1902 Colt Automatic Pistol, Military Model that Colt tried to sell to the U.S. Gov't. At that time, pistols were only issued to officers, artillery, and cavalry, and protocol with auto pistols was to carry it in Condition 3 (hammer down, chamber empty). It was felt that front serrations made the pistol easier to "rack & load" on horseback.
