We've got an imp cyl patternmaster on an 870 with a 20" barrel. Throws a tight pattern with 00 buck at 15 yards, possibly too tight, roughly 18-24". In a self defense situation, it would definitely have to be aimed. It's not going to throw a big no-miss pattern from across a room, but it will remove any extremeties you connect with.

I wasn't aware that they made the Pattern master choke in designated constrictions. I bought mine last year from Cabela's after recommendations from friends and reading up on the specs. Pattern master gets its tight patterns from lands in the choke that delay the wad/shot cup, keeping the wad and gases from blowing through the shot pattern. PM reports 15 12 gage 3" OO pellets within a 20" circle at 40 yards. I found this to be right on. I made three one shot kills, from 40 to 65 yards, on whitetales last season with the choke and Winchester Supreme 3" mag shells. I'll never use anything else for buckshot or duck/goose loads.

I use one on my 870 super-mag and with 3 1/2 00 buck federal premiums get around 16 out of the 18 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. Some times I will take out the pattern-master for anticipated shorter distance shots under 25 yards, but for longer shots 35-50 yds., I'll swear by it, good luck...
