It isn't "too Hot" at all, but I would follow Marks advice on cleaning and reloading.I'm not to sure on what his caution is on shooting "Sporting/Hunting Ammo"in surplus guns ??

it would be a very bad idea to chamber and fire a .30 CAL 240 grain BARNES BRONZE SAFARI SOLID in your M-1 GARAND...

it would not be advisable to chamber and fire CORBON .45-70 GOVT 350 grain BONDED CORE FLAT POINT +P+ HIGH PERFORMANCE / HIGH VELOCITY ammo out of your TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD...

most internal box magazine military surplus rifles will not feed, strip, and chamber soft point hunting ammo correctly...

most commercial ammo, especialy european loadings (LAPUA, NORMA, SAKO, etc...) can and often do exceed the maximum recomended chamber pressures of mil-spec / mil-surplus arms. even if in NIB mint condition, with little or no use and wear (not what you typicly encounter from surplus military guns) it is not advisable or wise to hope and pray your loading will be OK...

military surplus ammo is designed to be used in the military guns they were ment for... a lot of though and time went into the load, design, and specs of these purpose built ammos...

    point made??? nuff said???

    best regards, mike.

    Hi snuffysgat,

I think shooting surplus ammo for plinking is just fine. There won't be any harm done to you or your rifle with the right ammo.

What I would question is why shoot corrosive ammo when non-corrosive is available. Check this link:

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/search/search.asp?r=default.asp&k=.30-06+ammunition&a=SEARCH&bt=N&c=&p=3

The above is a link for non-corrosive .30-06 ammo, boxer primered and reloadable. Not a bad deal.
