Colt Anaconda - need advice

I have a chance to buy a Colt Anaconda for $500, serial # MM298xx, and my question is this.....I heard that some of the first Anacondas had barrel problems where the bore was milled off center. Can I tell by the serial number if this Anaconda is affected? ( I suspect it is since the rear sight is was off to the one side) I won't have the luxury of shooting this gun before I buy it.

Another question.....can anyone tell me what year of manufacture this gun is based on the serial # ?

    A while back I ordered a S&W 686 for a customer.He called me and said there was something wrong with the gun.He said in order to hit anything he had to adjust the sight over so far he was afraid it was going to fall off.Luckily he had a range in his back yard.I adjusted the rear sight back to the middle and put 6 shots in the black at 50ft.It is not always the guns fault that the sights are adjusted way off center.[:)]

    I have a Colt Anaconda with a serial # real close to the one you have described. Mine was manufactured in 1992. It is the most accurate revolver I have ever fired.

    Not sure what to tell you about the milled off center problem you mentioned. I have never heard about this, but that does not mean it did not occur....

    Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....

    My Anaconda has a serial # about 3K higher than yours & it is a fine shooter.

    A heavy bullet in a hand gun at magnum velocity generates torque that twists the gun (recoil occurs both back & sideways). The tighter you hold a gun, the less the gun is going to move before the bullet leaves the barrel.

    Chances are the person that sighted the gun was loose wristed. Still, an Anaconda is a sizable investment so ask if the dealer would object if your 'smith checked it prior to purchase. I would pay a few dollars to a 'smith for insurance & peace of mind.
