Antique Smokepole Help

Thought that maybe someone here might be familiar with a Full Stock Antique Rifle that a Friend of mine has had passed down to him.His Great Great Grandfather was the original Owner.

Maybe answers as to the History, and what the worth of it might be.

Full StockRifle with incursive writing on top of barrel that reads - H Shepter No. 64. On the side below the hammer it reads - H.E.Leman,Lancaster PA

It is a Caplock.

    Henry Lehman/Leman was one of the most famous makers of the Pennsylvania style "Indian Trade Rifle," in business in Lancaster County PA from 1834-c.1890.

    Original examples of his work in high condition can bring significant dollars. I would suggest an individual hands-on appraisal from someone familiar with Leman's work. It is possible that the lock only was purchased from Leman, or the barrel stamping may be a component manufacturer or sales outlet marking.

    The "No.64" would suggest more of a trade item than a custom rifle. This would put the rifle into a rather more common category as to value from a collector standpoint.

    You mentioned nothing of a patchbox, furniture, carving, or inlays. Thus, I can only surmise that the rifle is bare. Full stock... Tiger maple or something else? Perhaps a straight-grained walnut or the like?

    Now let's look at the ramrod ferules. There should be three placed at equal distances down the barrel. If the barrel has been cut, then the last ferule will be closer to the middle than the first.

    A photo would be nice as a trade item might only bring a couple hundred dollars but a fancy rifle could bring many times that much.

    Obviously a very subjective business here and little details mean so very much.
