want to modify semi-auto shotgun
Now that the AWB has expired, I'd like to get a semi-auto shotgun with a pistol grip and a top-folding stock. I understand that most semi-autos are designed with the recoil spring in the stock and a pistol grip wouldn't have room for the spring. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for well-made, affordable guns that could be bought or modified to this configuration.

Remington 11-87 is right around 700.00 and is a great gun for the money. Next step up are Benelli Shotguns but the safety on those are not south paw friendly at all. Also the price jumps to about 900+ depending on model. Benelli are nice that they have a feature where you can have a fully loaded tube, pull the bolt back and it will not chamber the next round. Comes in very handy if you have to do a select slug drill, or go to a less lethal round instead of what you already got loaded in your tube. 0 -

Years back I use to own a 870 with a Remington made pistol grip, top folding stock. The steel strut on the top folder, use to slap me stupid when I shot it. I would recommend that you reconsider your decision to get one, until you had a opportunity to fire a shotgun equipped with one. 0 -

I'm pretty sure (actually positive) that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the older Remington Model 58 semi-auto shotgun (one of the first, if not the first gas operated shotgun made by Remington) will accommodate the same pistol grip as the Rem 870. The Rem Model 58 semi-auto shotgun has NO recoil spring in the butt stock since it is gas operated. They also have an adjustable gas knob on the magazine tube so the shooter can adjust the shotgun for either heavier loads or lighter loads. Also they are available in several gauges (20, 16, and 12) as well as being fairly inexpensive as shotguns go. You could probably pick up a fairly nice used one for around $250.00 to $300.00 bucks (may be less).
The only down sides is that the Model 58s mag tube can be modified with any kind of magazine extension (I don't believe) to accept more than 3 shells. Also you CAN ONLY use 2 3/4" shells in this model. However, if you are can live with these restrictions and are not going for the expensive "mocho look" like Franchi SPAS 12 type weapon (no slam intended on this fine shotgun, just pricey), you might want to consider look into getting one of these. Barrel could always be cut to around 20" (don't go below the OVERALL legal length by cutting barrel TOO SHORT) if you want to have just a nice home defense weapon.

Remember that modifying certain imported shotguns can still land you in hot water since they are supposedly affected by another ban in '89 and that doesn't expire. I know for a fact it affects the folding Benelli M3's because I wanted one and it went from a starting price of ~$1,000 to ~$2,500 overnight. So, make sure you know the law before modifying them...
The cheapest way you can get into this would probably be a pump gun like a Mossberg or Remington. For the best, I'd say it'd definately be the Benelli M3 which is selective pump or semi-auto like the ol' Franchi SPAS.0 -

When I fired it extended, ( from the shoulder ) the steel strut would rap me on the side of my face.0
