Custom Rifle Barrels Who is best?
Hello,
I am looking at placing a new stainless steel barrel on my Sako TRG-S in 30-06 with a Quiet Slimbrake II muzzlebrake. I was wondering who makes the lightest and most consistantly accurate barrel on the market. I was looking at Lilja, and Hart. Are there others.
Thank you

The Sako tube should be good out of the box, but if your heart is set on replacing it, think about Krieger and Douglas too.

I'd use "McGowen Rifle Barrels", (815)937-9816. He'll cut any contour/caliber/twist you want, in any material, (within reason) you want. If he installs it he gaurantee's that it will shoot to you satisfaction or will will replace it free of charge. These are true custom barrels, not a semi production outfit. 0 -
There is no discernable difference between the top makers. I would go with any of the following:
PacNor
Kreiger
Lilja
Hart
Shilen
Kostyshin
Broughton
Border
Mike Rock
Any barrel maker can have a bad batch of steel etc. If these inconsitencies aren't caught,..then the blanks from that batch will perform less than adequately. ANY top barrel maker who puts out a faulty blank will replace it free of charge. My gunsmith tells me that if I ever have a bad one,..the replacement will be in his shop in 24hrs. Go with the names that are on the benchrest circuit and you should be very happy.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Very good advice from JustC--the benchrest competitors look for the very best equipment AND they get it to shoot!

A barrelmaker that I can highly recommend is C.P.Donnelly of Grants Pass, OR. He was taught the trade by P.O.Ackley, and uses some of Ackley's barrel making equipment. I have about ten rifles with barrels that he has made and they are absolute top quality. Another shooter used his barrels in the course of winning several years of the Coors Blackpowder matches in Colorado. 0 -
Lilja, look at what the US Olympic team used...Besides I know Dan Lilja Sr. he is a rancher near me.. 0 -
Lilja and Kreiger were both trained by Boots Obermeyer. IF YOU EVER COME ACROSS AN OBERMEYER BARREL BLANK,..BUY IT ON THE SPOT!!!! EVEN IF IT COSTS $500 FOR THE BLANK,..YOU WILL NEVER BE SORRY.
