Put a new 6mm barrel on it. I thought 6mm could be re-chambered to 243? I know someone will know.

Hello sorry to offer only bad news I like remington so this is not a slam at all their guns BUT the 742 Has probablely made more gunsmith rich then any other gun Even Remington won't try to fix them and now gunsmiths hate them because they can't keep them working best thing you can do is sell the parts

Headspace, the distance from the cartridge head to the tapered portion on the neck

excessive headspace is usually from wear on either the bolt locking lugs or their mating surface (the 742 bolt mates directly to the barrel)

when a cartridge is chambered & the firing pin strikes the primer, the cartridge is driven in till it is stopped by the taper of the neck (rimmed cases headspace on the rim, belted mag. on the belt).
pressure expands the case to hold it to the chamber walls & pushes the case head back to the bolt. if headspace tolerance excedes the elasticity of the case, the case stretches & thins just ahead of the case head till in extreme cases, rupture occures.

try to determine where the wear is to evaluate whether a new barrel or bolt are needed. try "www.e-gunparts.com" for replacement parts. if it turns out to truly be a parts gun, gunparts corp. also buys parts.

    good luck

CUSSEDEMGUN IS CORRECT THAT THE PROBLEM IS EITHER THE BARREL OR BOLT (OR BOTH)IF ITS THE BOLT FORGET IT, 742 BOLTS ARE NONEXISTANT. BARRELS CAN BE HAD ON E-BARF AS A LOT OF 742'S ARE BEING 'PARTED OUT'. I DO A LOT OF WORK ON 742'S AND SUGGEST YOU PART IT OUT AND GET A GOOD RIFLE (BROWNING BAR MK2?). YOU CAN NOT RECHAMBER A 6MM (IN A 742) TO ANY THING USEABLE. YOU CAN REBARREL TO ANY OTHER CAL. THE 742 WAS MADE IN (USED 742 BARREL). ANY OTHER OPTION WILL COST MORE THAN THE RIFLE IS WORTH.
