Rust Removal

I just picked up a couple of older progressive reloaders. One is a Star in 44mag and the other is a Size O Matic 800B in 12ga. They both have some rust on them that I would like to remove. Is there anything better than steel wool and gun oil. How about the Rust/ Blue remover I have seen in the gun cleaning products. Any help would be great.

    I have a barrel from a very old pistol that has heavy rust. I want to take this down to bare metal. Short of sandblasting or a wire brush on my grinder, how can I do this. This is way past the chrome polish on a car bumper situation. Can I soak it in anything?

    Put it in CLP over night, it will remove the rust.

    nothing you soak it in is going to remove it . may loosen it up. it depends on how heavy the rust is. and what you can use depends on the brightness of the blue. if you have a dull blue like on cheaper 22 rifles and on certain revolvers. use a small stainless steel brush and wd-40 if rust is heavy. trust me it wont hurt it. if its light, use still wool. always try to go with the grain of the metal. for example on the barrel, go around the barrel, not end to end.its a harder little with the receiver. just take your time and start off light. youll be able to see if your going to screw it up or not. keep wiping it off and reappling oil so rust particles wont scratch the blue. redman.

    I found some great rust remover. Liquid, does not take blue off. Used on some blue clips and other things but never a barrel. If you want name of it email me and will send you the info.

    If using steel wool (bronze wool is better), be sure to use only 0000; anything coarser will scratch.

    I would have told him to soak it in water with lemon juice. Lay Aluminum foil in the bottom then fill with water. I used a 6 volt battery and put the - lead on the part and the + in on the aluminum. Next day rust is gone and does not harm the finish at all.

    You can use the internet to do a search on electrolysis for rusted metal parts. Works great on silveware as well.

    Try some ZEP45. It is a very good penetrating oil and lubricant. Also works to remove rust but is much 'gentler' than something like Naval Jelly. Can be found in most industrial supply houses. Spray it on and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. Spray another coating on and LIGHTLY rub with 0000 steel wool or a rag made with coarse fibers. A piece of old towel works really well. You want to remove the rust...not the finish.

    Magnesium wool works better that steel wool if you can find it. It will remove rust without removing the blue.
