Help!!! MOLD ?
I am getting mold growing on the wood stocks of my guns in the safe. How do I stop it? I cleaned them and oiled them down but it is coming back.[:(!]

I would think it means you have moisture in your safe , you need to dry it out ,put in a light bulb and leave it on or put in a golden rod. either should do the job 0 -
I would also use something to kill the mold, or the spores and hyphae will remain in the wood. a 1 part clorine bleach to 400 parts water solution will do it and should not harm wood if sponged off with water after a few minutes and dried with a soft absorbent rag. 0 -
I have the same problem. Can I use the bleach solution on my leather slings without damaging them? 0 -
It would depend upon how the leather is dressed or preserved. If bare, it will soak in, probably change the color and tend to weaken the leather over time (of course so will the mold so it is a trade off. If the leather is well oiled or waxed, the bleach will do less damage, but may change the color. I would be inclined to try it in a small inconspicuous place prior to putting it all over. It may be that a good saddlesoaping followed by a good waxing when dry will solve your problem. I have a fishing partner that owns a leather shop and have asked him how to remove and preserve. I will get back with his reply.
Rimfire, here is what my friend sent: Wipe it off then set it in the sun to really burn out the organism. When thoroughly dry treat with Mink oil, Neatsfoot or maybe even one of the snow/water proofing compounds available at good boot and sporting goods stores. After that I like to treat with a good wax or cream polish to reject further moisture.
Hope it works and tell him to treat his leather AFTER use and store it somewhere with good air circulation.
Probably best to avoid the bleach! Hope it works.0 -
