NEF Sidekick, any good? Do I need an FFL?

I'll readily admit I don't know much about muzzleloaders so I am looking for something inexpensive to get started. Can anyone give me some opinions on the NEF Sidekick.

Also, do I need to go through an FFL to get one? I am unclear on which types of "muzzleloaders" might require it.

    I think that all muzzleloaders are exempt from FFL transfer under federal law. However, certain states still require it (i.e. IL requires any shipments coming into the state to be to an FFL). Consult state laws before you do anything. Also, if it is a combo (same receiver can take barrels for rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader) then you need an FFL. I'm partial to CVA for price and features. NEF makes usable stuff, but pretty poor quality, IMHO. I wouldn't say not to get it, but don't be expecting a T/C Encore if you do get it.

    I hear they are awesome little guns. The price is great. They are very accurate. I don't think you need an FFL. The H&R Sidekick which is I believe the same gun is sold through the Bass Pro Shops catalog. Check out the www.huntamerica.com web site in-line muzzleloaders forum.

    The only blackpowder firearm you need an FFL for is the Thompson Center Contender. This is because you can use the receiver as a centerfire rifle by changing the barrel.Any other muzzleloader you can order through the mail without an FFL. Check out Cabela's, they have a good selection of entry level muzzleloaders.

    H&R made the Huntsman first and it is considered a firearm as it takes other "modern" shotgun barrels. The newest muzzleloader made by H&R is the Sidekick. It doesn't accept "moidern" barrels so no "yellow form" is needed, nor do "firearms" laws apply. These are all good guns. They are safe, very easy to clean, are drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and are accurate. My son took a 9 point buck with his Huntsman last year. His came with a 12 GA 3" chambered extra barrel. I bought the outfit new in the box for $150. It is hard to beat for the money and that nice set of antlers on my son's wall is proof that they can get the job done.
