1911 opinions please...
Hey, I'm considering purchasing a 1911 but don't really know what to get. They all seem pretty expensive, and although I've seen some in the 400-500 range, they tend to be from manufacturers that I don't know. I've heard of them, but never shot them and don't know anyone who owns one (Daly, Rock Island, etc). I have a bonus coming up at work and was thinking about getting a 1911. I'm not fond of the mil-spec models, they seem to need too much work. I'd like to get one that is realiable and shoots reasonable groups out of the box; one that I can customize over time but is a shooter out of the box. The only prejudice I have is: I don't want a Colt. I'm sure that many of you have had great experiences with them but I have not. Also seem to be pricey. Ultimately I'd really like to not have to replace the safety, slide release, grips, barrel, spring, guide, bushing, sights, mag well, trigger, and hammer to get a nice gun. Doesn't have to shoot 1" groups, but reasonable. Is there any such thing, or am I dreaming? Thanks for your advice/help/opinions!

Springfield Armory 1911A1 Mil-spec....IMHO, the best 1911 in your price range. It will be a decent shooter right out of the box.
The others you mentioned are marginal firearms. The Springfield will be reliable and provide decent accuracy right out of the box. It will not have the bells and whistles, but it will be easily modified.

Hey thanks, I checked them out on gunbroker and I can get a stainless mil spec for 500.00 or so. Assuming that's what I get, what would I need to upgrade? My biggest fear about 1911's and the reason I don't own one is: I don't want to spend 500-600 for the pistol, then 500-600 more on upgrades. What would the springfield need? Rock River Arms or Ed Brown. Really nice guns, right out of the box! Definately pricey but you'll like what you see for sure. Tanfoglio actually makes a 1911 series of guns now. If their 1911 is anything like the Witness series, it should bear looking at in turms of bang for the buck.

Question: What would the Springfield need?
Answer: Ammo!
I have four Kimbers and three Para Ordnances that are pretty well tricked out. About a month ago I bought a Springfield 1911A1 WW II GI just to have a plain Jane basic gun. Out of the box, it was nice and tight, dead nut reliable, and quite accurate.
Just get your gun, start shooting it, and enjoy it. After you've shot 1000's of rounds through it, you'll have a better idea of what you might want to change.0 -
well I have said it before and I will stick to it,My favorite is the Dan Wesson,you can get a nice one around your price range.I bought my first one here on GB from Dan Wesson direct,liked it so much I bought another,I have run well over 5000 rds thu each and never had a problem.I have a several other 1911's including a couple that cost well over 2 grand and I will put the Dan Wesson up against them for fit and accuracy anyday but the Little parts on the Dan Wesson like the safety could use a better finish. The Springfield loaded is also a nice 1911 for just a little more than your price range but its cheaper to go ahead and buy a loaded version than a mil-spec and then upgrade it 0 -

i have a bi-tone milspec( not the GI model) springfield armory.
since getting it i have put pachmyer american legend grips on it, hex grip screws, a dwyer group gripper guid rod and a match grade bushing.
it was quit accurate out of the box and now it is shooting better than i could have hoped for with the amount of work done to it thus far.
can't go wrong with a springfield armory milspec.
on a side note:if ya get the SA milspec, get the extracter tunes as i am tired of getting hit in the head by brass being kicked directly back at me0 -
kimber classic for my money. best out of the box (my opinion of course) if you look around you can get a clean used one for around $500.00 on the other hand I would take any good name brand 1911 over any hand gun on the market. Best duty weapon i ever carried. 0 -
Dan wesson!!!!!!!! I got one for 600Dls and very nice gun and has a lifetime warranty!! 0 -
I just don't understand why someone would want such an antiquated design with such a big old, ineffective, slow round. Ok, well maybe I do understand. For the money the Dan Wesson is hard to beat. That would be the left side middle.

Yeah...that really clears it up for you huh.
But, I'll toss in that I picked up a Springfield 1911A1 a short while ago. It had a hand fitted bushing/taper barrel. The trigger did not creep and is very crisp. Spent $ 400 and the only extras were ammo and mags. Shoots like it's part of your hand.0 -
Common to other posts on this thread, I too have a Springfield Armory 1911 that was loaded up at the factory. Have never wanted for anything since buying this pistol. RELIABLE, VERY accurate, nice blued frame and stainless slide. Excellent value for the money.
As Staind460 says,...and all the posters on this thread will validate, it is cheaper to buy a loaded factory gun than to have it customized up after purchase. They only down side is the the factory package my not include every option you want and may include extras you don't want....but if you can find a reasonable package in a Springfield 'Custom Gun' you'll be happy with the choice.

IMHO, the Kimber Classic is the way to go for your budget. I've seen them on sale for as low as 650 brand new. Out of the box it has been one of my best shooters and my primary training gun for the past 2 years. You can get a clean used one easily for 500.00. But remember no matter what 1911 you get, BUY GOOD MAGS! Cheap 1911 mags will cause malfunctions left and right even in the high dollar pistols.
Is the gun going to used for target shooting or play more of a duty weapon role?0
