Springfield Defender .45 ACP
I would like some imfo and help,advice etc. about a Springfield .45
Defender Mod. This is my first .45 auto,purchased it used. Some imfo about this pistol,2 tone stainless and blue,all the usual bells and whisles, 11/2 inch.(looks like factory)compensator on end of barrel.
Defender Model Cal .45 stamped on left of slide. Sringfield Armory and
trademark on rt.side. Frame is stamped Springfield Geneseo IL USA NM
153821. I also got 2 mags one original and one after market. I have run approx.300 rds.of factory and handloads thru this pistol and the only problem is slide not staying back on empty.
This .45 is very accurate out to 50 yrds. I was also shooting some rds at a local indoor range and the range officer said I should
have a smith check the lockup.He said the pistol was shooting very good,but I should have it checked out by a gunsmith. I would appreciate any help,imfo or advice on what I should do before firing
too many rds and chance of damaging anything. I have replaced the slide stop with a new one from browells,this did not cure the problem
of slide not staying back. Thanks in advance!

Did you properly fit the slide stop would be the first question ,two other things can cause this ,the magazines ,buy a Wilson/Rodgers and try it ,also you need to make sure that your recoil spring is compatible with the loads you are shooting ,and it is not worn out
Now with that being said ,when shooting with a compensator ,two things come into play ,the bullet {weight and charge},the recoil spring must also match ,usually a lower weight recoil spring is used to allow the slide to fully go into battery due to the fact that you are loosing a bit of back pressure
What bullet weight are you shooting?
Did you change the recoil spring ? {good for around 2,000 rounds only}
does it lock back manualy with a empty mag?
{just a tip ,edit your serial numbers }
i will now put ten round mags in all my pre ban guns ,just to show defiance

The way a slide stop works is the tip of the mag follower pushes up on the slide stop after the last round is chambered as the slide goes all the way back in full recoil a spring that is too heavy will cause the slide not to go all the way back under recoil "WORN SPRING" will not give this trouble. ALSO recoil BUFFERS and other DODADS that say they soften recoil will give you problem you are haveing. Any recoil operated semiauto will fail to function if it is not given enough resistance upon fireing get someone who is short and heavy that can really BACK UP the pistol and see if you still have gun trouble I am a old skinny guy and in shooting a long match when I get tired and start to limp wrist it my pistol gives me problems like this. 0 -

Thanks alot for the imfo, I'm shooting 230grn FMJ ammo.The only change made to pistol was slide stop,I used a wilson brand and I'm sure I got a good fit. The slide does lock back manually.My handloads
are running approx. 830 fps. I guess I'll check recoil spring next.
Should I purchase some different weight springs and experiment or consult a gunsmith? burninpowder0 -
I would buy an assortment of springs . Throw away any BUFFERS that you may have in the gun . start with spring slightly lighter then now in the pistol load one round and fire it . If slide stays back you fixed problem if not put in reduce spings one at a time and repeat remember if you go to heavier loads go to heavier spring. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN" 0 -

you said,get an assortment of springs and work it out. Thanks abunch,
I like the process of troubleshooting, you get to shoot more.LOL I've
been on other forums, but so far I like this one best.

I ran into the same problem today ,I tried out a 185 grain bullet with a light load ,exactly as you described happened to me ,I came home raised my powder level .3 grains ,and took care of it ,I am going to buy some reduced power springs so I can shoot the lower power rounds in a match {like idpa ,but not}

Hi burninpowder,
All the responses have been right on.
If none of the above works, I would also suggest trying a different high quality magazine. Sometimes the springs in the mags get weak after being used for a while or being stored loaded.
Many years ago I bought a number of economy magazines to shoot in my 1911. Few if any of the magazine followers would engage the slide stop so the slide would always close after the last round. Replacement with a decent magazine solved my problem.

I am taking in all of this imfo and will get ready for my next
range session. I have all my load data and gun problems documented
and carry my notes with me when I'm testing loads. I think the springs
and tweaking loads and some new mags should nail down my problem. I'm
just getting started with the .45acp and so far I like it, even with
the small problems. After all if everything went our way all the time
it would take the challenge out it. No pain,No gain right!
