1911 opinions please...Part 2
Hello again and thanks to everyone for the advice! I apologize for starting a new thread but the original topic is locked?! Anyone know how or why this happens? There were only 13 responses and everyone was really nice, so I don't understand. Anyway on with the post: Someone asked about how the gun will be used. Target/recreational shooting only. I won't be competing with this, I'd just like something a little different than Glock. So far I'm going to check out a "loaded" gun from the factory, concensus seems to be that is the cheaper route. For Manufacturers, looks like Springfield has the edge right now with Dan Wesson and Kimber a close second. Anyone with any recommendations feel free to chime in, I'm probably about a month from actually buying it. Thanks again

I would rule out the dan Wesson ,it is not on the same league as the kimber or springfield
i will now put ten round mags in all my pre ban guns ,just to show defiance

I would strongly consider your choice of the Kimber. I think the Gold Match is far superior to either the Springfield or the Wesson. Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing the matter with any of these choices and I am not disparaging them. I do have a bias for the Kimber Gold Match because I own one and would never get rid of it.
It shoots about 1.5 inches at 25 yards, doesn't jam, isn't particular about the ammo its feed, and has a great trigger. I know you will pay more for this model than the other two but you said you wanted a "loaded" gun. If you check out the specs, I think you will find that the Gold Match is loaded and outperform the other two brands.

If your budget is limited to $600 or under check out the Kimber BP10. I think I saw them on here for $550.
Springfield shops out a lot of there work (jobs) to Brazil. [xx(]
Kimber is still completely made in the USA.

For target shooting Kimber would be the way to go for sure. Out of the box they outshoot almost all 1911s in their price range. Like I've mention in my previous post all I train with is a standard Kimber Classic with fixed sights. The courses are tough and truely test the equipment used in them. Over the pass 2 years my Kimber has yet to let me down, given that good maintnance and ammmo is used. On the other hand my buddy with a TRP Operator from Springfield (Their top of the line tactical pistol which cost around 1400.00) has had his firing pin break, multiple firing pin springs break, and not to mention those nice 200 dollar adjustable target sights tend to shift with all the beating the gun takes during a course. And the kicker is, the Springfield TRP doesn't use a standard firing pin! And Springfield won't send him one for some reason, so he had to send the gun in for a firing pin replacement! Sorry for rambling on guys. And NO I do not work for Kimber. 0 -
Top of the line, money no object for a production gun would be Kimber. Next on my list would be one of the Springfield loaded series. If money is an issue, I'd probably just go with a Springfield. I don't know what the above poster is talking about in regard to problems with the Springfield.
Rock River, Ed Brown, STI Trojan, Les Baer and the like are all excellent guns, but I consider them more on the custom side, with prices to match.
If you're gun is getting beat up, go to heavier weight recoil spring. The only time I've seen a firing pin break was when a guy was using loads hot enough to melt the primer cup, jamming the firing pin in the forward position, then shearing the tip off when the case was ejected. Regardless, replacing a firing pin isn't rocket science. Anyone who doesn't drool on his self should be able to do it. For most 1911s, just depress the firing pin and slide down the firing pin stop. On guns that have a firing pin block, you'll have to depress a plunger on the underside of the slide to allow the firing pin to travel forward, to slide off the firing pin stop, and then you might need to press the plunger again to allow the firing pin to be removed out the back of the slide.0 -
The problem was not knowing how to change out the firing pin, but it was with springfield un-willing to ship out one for the TRP Operator. If you get a chance to look at the firing pin of the TRP it is not the standard size pin like other 1911s ie Kimbers, and the other Springfields 1911s they make. It almost looks like a 38 Super firing pin. Since the gun came out of their custom shop they said they would need the gun back for replacement of the part according to my buddy. He has even tried getting a firing pin from Wilson Combat and that did not fit either. If I get a chance I will post a pic of it. 0 -
I just traded in my Glock 21, 45 cal ACP, which I truly loved to shoot and to carry for a Kimber Pro CDP II 45 cal. What a great gun this Kimber is. I bought my first 1911 earlier in the summer. I chose a Springfield Stainless Mil-Spec--The one with the bigger sights, lower port etc.
I cannot say I'm unhappy with its reliability, I just finished 1100 round through it today with 0 malfunctions (except a couple of my first handloads during load development) I've shot hollow points such as Gold Dots, XTP's and semi-wadcutters without incident. The problem is the trigger and it just ain't that accurate, and I'm a fairly consistent handgun shooter.
My friend got a Kimber Stainless II and It's awesome, no differences reliability wise. We just passed 600 round mark through it today. His is 100% too. But the accuracy and trigger, overall fit, finish as well as smoothness of operation has caused me to put a Stainless Target II on layaway and I have a done deal on My Mil-Spec.[;)]
It probably ain't fair to compare a Springfield Mil-Spec to a Kimber...but it convinced me! Kimber all the way.
P.S. I thought long and hard about a Dan Wesson and still would like to have one, but not as my only 1911, I've read too much about little problems...that they will fix, but my range time is valuable!0 -
Build your own. Mine is made from Essex parts, Chip McCormick and other misc. parts. It shoots great, is reliable and accurate. Ive got about $600 in it now including the trigger job. All worth it.

Here is an update on Kimber accuracy - out of the box.
I let one of my buddies shoot my Kimber Gold Match last night. We were at the indoor range shooting from the 20 yard line with my reload ammo. My ammo is 3.7 grains of WST and 230 grain round nose lead bullet. The gun fired 150 rounds last night and neve jammed or misfired once.
A buddy of mine was shooting and my Kimber and put 5 shots in one hole on the target. The other three were within about 2 inches but not bunched together like group of five.
Anyway I wish I could shoot like that, but it does demonstrate the accuracy of the out of the box Kimber. They are tack drivers.
