Mark, Sounds like you need to clean the gun and oil it more often. After 14 years of good hard hunting use, it may be time to buy the new 870. I think you will find that the repairs will be almost as much as a new gun. Hang the old one over the mantel and remember all the good times you had with it.

I would hate to see you or someone else do some "repairs" only to have the gun jam or worse yet, blow up because of a malfunction or wrongful repair. I think the local gun guy may have the expertise and advice you need to follow. Dont chance it, it is not worth and eye or hand.

If you have never broken this firearm down and cleaned it in 14 years of rough hunting then it is time to do so now. As far at the thing "blowing up", that is a very remote possibility unless you plug the barrel. The 870 is a very simple gun to completely disassemble, clean and reassemble.

870 is a very easy gun to disassemble and clean. You can download a manual on line from Remington and it will show you everything. Use a lot of breakfree, that will clean and lub. There isn't a lot that can go wrong with that gun, once you get it down you will notice if anything is broke. parts are fairly inexpencive if you need any.

I can't believe anyone would go 14 years of hunting without routine maintenance. Regardless of your gun cleaning habits (like all habits..rarely change), it sounds like that 870 has served you well up to now. You can replace it from discount stores for a reasonable amount of change... You can take you old one to a gunsmith just to see what is wrong. You may end up with two guns.

It just so happens our 870 Wingmaster and Express guns range from 3 to 34 years old, and each gets used every season. I have used some very nice shotguns, but I don't do any better than with my old wingmaster.

SAW YOU 870 UP AND USE FOR DECOYS ANCHORS. A GOOD USE 870 WILL COST LESS THAN $200.00 SOUNDS LIKE A BARGIN TO ME I ALSO DON'T LIKE TO CLEAN GUNS AND 14 YEARS FOR $200.00 IS CHEAP. HOW IS THE HUNTING??

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.
