I believe that they were made only in 1999. S&W doesn't usually release information such as # produced or the reason why a particular model was discontinued. Not many were made, & they are collectible, so I would guess that most who own one won't shoot it.

I have never heard of a 242 Smith. They did make a 442 alloy frame 38 Centennial in about 1992-93. It was dropped awhle later in favor of the stainless 642. No problems, typical S&W quality.

    Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob

    (7) shot Titanium cylinder, alloy L frame, .38 Special.

Generally when a firearms company, drops something like this with a production run of only a year?, it's lawyer driven. Look at Colt with the 9 x 23, they introduced it in 96 and only marketed for 6 months. Lawyers are Wussies!

I think Steve Fjestad missed this one, too. It's not listed in the Blue Book.

Here's a link to one currently listed on GB.

I simply think the reason they dropped it so fast is because it didn't sell well. Who's brain child was it? Who were they marketing to? It was a pocket pistol that was too big to put in your pocket.
