What's wrong with my scope?
I have a Weaver 3x9 variable mounted on a Mauser 3000 rifle. The caliber is .30-06. I bought this scope many years ago at a gun show. It needed repair and in 1994 I sent it back to Weaver in El Paso for complete refurbishing. They did this and I mounted the scope and bore sighted it in my back yard at 25 yards. Not hunting anymore and not having access to a high power target range, I hung it on the rack and there its been since that time. I was invited to do some shooting last weekend and set up target at 50 yards, the first three shots made a perfect cloverleaf four inches high and four inches left. And there it stayed. Since it obviously worked when I bore sighted it, could it be that lying dormant for 10 years "froze" the reticle controls. And if so, what can I do besides sending it back to the factory?

I have an issue with my scope. The cross hairs look shap until after the first shot, then they get blurry. After a few minutes they sharpen back up. I haven't touched the parralax adjustment or anything.
I was worried it was mirage, but today it was 20 degrees and it happened after the first shot.
Am I crazy or going blind?0 -
Are you saying that when you were shooting it, adjusting the windage and elevation screws did nothing? 0 -
Hello John if I understand your question correctly your turret will move but it does not move the point of impact. Remember that on this weaver scope one click is 1/8 of an inch at 50 yards so you will have to move a bunch of clicks to move it 4 inches if it won't move in the direction you want try to move in the opposite direction move two or three full turns if this does not work you are SOL . 0 -
MD Burns, That's exactly right, turned the R knob 8 clicks and the group stayed stayed right where it was. Turned the D (opposite of UP) 8 clicks. Still stayed there.
Perry Shooter, Yes, I should have tried that while I was out there. Since there's no way I can be worse off than what I am know I may just play with it and then re-boresight it. Thanks.0 -
Beats me. 8 clicks should have shown up on the target. Actually there are a few things that could explain it that don't have to do with the scope. But you always go for the easiest fix first. I have an inkling that you just need to give it a few more clicks. There is a way to check to see if the scope is working without shooting it but it's not all that easy unless you have a way to lock the rifle down on a bench. 0 -

If you have access to a boresight you can watch the crosshairs to see if they move when adjusted without having to shoot the rifle.0 -
Hello prairie dog shooter has it nailed I had old mans brain FXXX use your bore sighter. you might be at the end of movement one way with the mounts you have look at bore sighter and take large movements on turrets see if cross hairs move in relationship with bore sight grid. 0 -

It's tough to have to admit you're a dumba__, and I'm not positive I am regarding this particular incident but I've been working on this all afternoon. I was going to try Perry Shooter's suggestion that I back out the elevation and windage knobs a full turn and start over but in looking at the knobs, the windage knob was screwed in so far I couldn't move it with the finger tips, had to take a small screwdriver to move it out. The elevation knob had a clearance of 1/16" above the turret top. I backed out the windage knob to the same clearance. Using the old target at 25 yards, I removed the bolt of the rifle, secured the rifle to the back of my couch and looking down the bore got the bullseye in the center. Then looking thru the scope moved the windage and elevation knobs and everything worked, centered the crosshairs on the bull. Still don't know what the problem was but apparently the windage knob was screwed in too far. Thank you all for your help. 0 -
If you over adjust the windage or elevation, it locks the movement of the crosshairs.
