Advice on a Winchester 30/06

Hello All,

My first post and I am sorry to ask a question straight off. I am based in the UK and have just inherited a Winchester Rifle and would like to know what it is worth. As I may be interested in selling it.

Pre 1964 Model 70 Winchester 30/06 Serial Number 22038
Original Blueing,
Lyman Peep Sight,
Presentation Grade Walnut Stock,
Ebony Fore end Tip,
Old Original Safety Back to Fire,
Steel Hand Chequered Butt Plate,

It has had very little use and appears to be a Factory Presentation Model. I can supple photos if this would help. Please could you give me your thoughts on this Rifle and an indication of price.

    First of all welcome to the board. Your rifle sounds like a Pre War Super Grade model 70. Manufacture date sometime in 1939. More info would be needed as far as the "presentation grade" is concerned. Most of the Super Grades had very nice wood. Pictures would help alot. If in all origial very good condition the rifle would be sought after. Condition will determine the price. Hope this helps some.

    Hello Mark...

    You could have your hands on a potentially desirable (valuable) Winchester. It appears that you have a very early made Supergrade, and as such, it is highly collectable (at least here in the States). Posting some good quality pictures of it would help immensely in evaluating exactly what you have, and its condition.

    I will take some good photos so you can have a closer look. Is it possible to put them on this forum or will I have to email them too you? Incidentally this rifle bears no form of British Proof markings, I gather that this is important to American collectors.

    Mark-If it is a Super Grade, the floorplate should be so stamped.The stock will have a cheekpiece, and the sling swivels are inletted. The year of manufacture is about 1938-39.Sounds like a very nice rifle!

    Hello Mark...

    Yes, you can post photos on this forum, but you need a host server to do so. If you do have a host server, you can send them to me at Win1885@msn.com

    As for the British proof marks being important to collectors... that really depends upon the individual collector. I personally own six different Winchesters (mostly Model 1885 Single-shots) that have British proofs on them, and the presence of those proofs does not bother me in the least... it is simply a part of their long and interesting history[^].

    Hangfire provided some additional information that can help you determine what you have.

    Trimix, welcome to the forum! As far as "British Proofs" there are several possibilities, one being it's on the bottom of the barrel and not visible unless the stock is removed. Have you checked that? If indeed, there are no British Proofs, I would say there would be no way to tell when the gun crossed the pond![:D] I don't know if the requirement for Bristish Gun dealers to have imports Proof Tested was suspended during the war, or if it has been eliminated all together. I do have a Winchester Md 12 Duck Gun with British Proofs, and they are located on the opposite side down low and you have to really look for them. It didn't bother me when I bought the gun, but some collectors may shy away, but I wouldn't. Based on what's been said, it does sound like a rare Winchester. Good Luck, Regards Dave

    Thanks for all the information. I really appreciate you all taking the time to help. I have sent some high resolution pictures to Bert H. so you can all have a look and let me know what you think. I hope all the information I have given you is correct. As for the proof marks I have been told by a reputable Gun Smith here in the UK that is bears no proof marks at all. I do not know if he looked under the stock.

    My pre-war standard grade M70 has ser no. 19xxx and was mfg'd in 1939. Also in 30-06, the barrel is marked ".30 Gov't".
