M4 Barrel Questions
Now that the "scary looking features" ban has expired, I'm looking into replacing the pressed-on Y-comp on my Bushmaster M4 with a real flash suppressor.
Question 1: I can't seem to find *just* a replacement 14" barrel. Everybody wants to sell assemblies. Can I replace just my barrel and re-use the other parts? The answer seems an obvious "yes" to me, but, again, I can't seem to find just a barrel.
Question 2: Current barrrel is 14" + 2.5" for the Y-comp. I really should have gone with a longer barrel when I bought the rifle, and my groups arent' as tight as I'd like. Can I replace it with a 16" or 18" barrel and use my existing parts (gas tube, front sight, hand guards, etc)?
Question 3: What are the experts' thoughts on sending my barrel to a gunsmith/machinist to have it threaded?

1. www.bushmaster.com go to barrels section, barrels sell with handguards gas tube etc, or can be ordered as "barrel only" for a little less cash.
2. bushmaster makes an m4 profile barrel extended to 16" which is threaded, for attachment of flashhiders/brakes/silencers
3. you dont have an SBR(or atleast if you dont), therefore your barrel must be atleast 16", permanently attached flashhiders and breaks count towards that length... if you want to put a flash hider on a 14.5" barrel it will have to be permanently attached, negating any point to threading the barrel. If you are a law enforcemnt officer, or register your weapon as a short barrelled rifle, go ahead and thread it.0
