Ithaca Flues

I need to know what 20 ga. shells on the market that I can safely shoot in my Flues model. I'm not set up to reload yet. Can I use those gauge insert adapters in 28 ga. to keep the pressure down in the Ithaca Flues? I know Gamebore, RST, not sure about Estate, all have a low 1200 velocity would this be safe to use? Also can I use 2 1/2" shell in my Flues model that is chambered for 2 3/4"? Forgive my ignorance, PLEASE!

    Just picked up a Ithaca flues grade 4 (no letters) 16ga. 2 9/16" chambers two barrel set made in 1920. One barrel 25" ic/ic, the other 32" f/f. Nothing fancy, all numbers match, shows grade 4 on both barrels and receiver. What do i have? Could this (restored) be a valuable gun? Being a two barrel set i don't think it was just a stock order gun. It was probabbly ordered for someone i am asuming. Gun is very tight and top lever is to the right. Just trying to see if i just wan't to shoot it or restore it (more fun to show off) and then shoot the crap out of it. Any thoughts or help would be appreceated.

    Hello tksims...

    You can use any of the non-magnum commercially loaded 20 gauge shells except those that are loaded with steel shot, and yes, you can use 2 1/2" shells in it... but it is not necessary.

    Bert, there was a recent discussion about just this subject on another forum, and the general consensus was that, because of the relative weakness of the Flues frame, only light field loads should be used. Not arguing-- just quoting.

    I don't necessarily believe everything that the "general consensus" comes up with, and I would recommend that you take what you read on the DG forum with a large grain of salt or two. Don't get me wrong, there are some real sharp fellows on that forum, but they are not always 100% coorect.

    I have been shooting standard 7/8-ounce loads in my old Ithaca for a LONG time with absoulutely no problems. It has been my experience that the fellows who complain about the Flues being a little on the delicate side are the same people who at some time or another were stuffing magnum loads in the gun (or bought one that had been shot a quite a bit with heavy loads). The problem that I have with the "general consensus", is that it is nothing more than a bunch of opinions (and we all know what opinions most closely resemble[xx(]), and they are not based on any real concrete factual information. My recommendation to tksims is based soley on first hand experience versus conjecture[^]
