Another 16 gauge question

When did they change from 2 9/16 to 2.75? Was it done piece meal or a pretty standard date?

  I do not believe that is was a standard switch across all of the various scattergun manufacturers. Winchester made the switch in the mid 1920s, and Browning was sometime in the 1930s... I do not know when the other makers made the switch.

  Punchie: Most of the manufactures had made the switch by the mid 30's. They all had one thing in common, once they made the switch they started marking the chamber length on the barrel. Rule of thumb on pre-WWII shotguns, if there is no marking on the barrel(s) telling you the chamber length, it may be the short one. Most gunsmiths made a good living on converting the shotguns that could be converted, and would steel stamp 2 3/4 on the barrel, but not always. It's best to always measure when in doubt.
