Need to I.D. Rifle has Winchester & Easton Rifle

We have a Model 86 that has Winchester Repeating Arms on the middle of the octagon barrel and Easton Rifle Co. 45 70 in front of the sight. Can anyone explain why there would be another company name on this rifle. I do not know where the serial number would be. I only find a small 3 beside the trigger. Thanks

    Hello djw...

    The serial number is located on the end of the lower tang (behind the lever). The caliber should be marked on the top of the barrel just in front of where it screws into the receiver frame. I have not ever heard of the "Easton Rifle Co.", and I agree that it is strange that an apparent firearms company would mark their name on a different manufacters firearm. Can you post or provide some pictures of your rifle?

    I'm going out on a limb here so will gladly stand corrected if what I say is in error. I believe your rifle was rebarreled , probably some time in the 50's, by a company in Utah that P.O.Ackley (of Ackley barrel fame) was associated with for a while after he left Trinidad, CO. They also made reloading equipment and complete custom guns. My understanding is that there was a falling out between Easton and Ackley and they parted ways. I suspect the barrel was installed during Ackley's tenure there, marked by the Easton Co. to indentify it as a rebarrel job (also for some advertisment), but that is pure speculation on my part.

    If that were the case (rebarreled by Easton or Ackley), I do not believe that the barrel would have Winchester's address stamped on it, and apparently in the correct location. However, without seeing the rifle (or pictures of it), you are correct in that anything we can say is pure speculation.

    It sounds to me like an original Win barrel was rebored/rechambered to 45/70 by Easton and then stamped. The original caliber mark could have been removed during refinishing.

    Bert- weren't the caliber stamps relatively light?

    Hello Bob... yes, the serial numbers were stamped fairly light on the early made 1886s. However, those that were made from about 1900 to the end of production in 1935 were stamped quite deeply. I like your theory better (rebored & chambered barrel), but I would still prefer to see some pictures of it first before passing judgement.
