sight in 338 win mag

My friend just bought a H S precision 338 win mag. How high should we
sight the rifle in at 100 yards. He is going out West in october and
wants capable of longer shots if needed. I am not familar with this
caliber so any help would be appreciated.

    Need bullet weight and Vel. and how far he plans to shoot. I do 3" @ 100 high on most of my center fires. Which puts me between 275-400 yrds. Just depends on the cal. bullet weight, and vel. to be pin point.

    Go here. http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/centerfire/results.asp?cal=43 It's only for Remington ammo, but you'll get an idea. Note that the 225 drops 4" at 200 with a 100 yard zero and almost 15" at 300. So if he sights in 4" high at 100, he'll be on at 200 and nearly 9" low at 300. Mind you, he'll have to be very good a judging distances. Even an elk is small at 300 yards.

    I sight my .338s in at 0 at 200 yards. This rifle shoots flat enough that a 2" HIGH SITTE IN at 100 yards is perfect for most hunting situation out here in the west. Your friend made a good choice for a hunting rifle, enjoy!

    We did the final prep work/sight in yesterday for our Wyoming hunt oct 11th-17th.

    This may give you some idea

    My 7mm rem mag with a 26" barrel sighted in at ~3-4" high at 100yds with either the federal premium 150gr NBT or the 160gr accubond loading are just about 1" high at 200yds, and ~3-4" low at 300yds. That is a "hold on hair, and pull the trigger" sight in for 300yd shots.

    My partners 300wsm out of a 24" tube with 180gr pills was only slightly lower at 300yds,..but still was a "hold on hair" sight in.

    Muzzle vel for all three loads was ~3050fps (nice round number for this discussion)

    Go with a 200gr pill,...set it 3-4" high at 100yds and hold on hair all the way out to 300yds and give a little daylight under the crosshairs and over the backbone at 400yds.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Tell me, how is your &RUM in terms of recoil & accuracy? Do you still have the factory tube on it? Is it a Remington rifle?

    easygo6,..my 7mm rem mag is a stainless fluted Sendero (rem 700 of course)[;)] My 300RUM is a rem700 action,..but that is where the similarities stop. She has a 30" PacNor select match SS tube 1:10 twist finished at .975" and a Vais break contoured to the barrel. The action is trued and blued, sako extractor, rifle basix trigger, mcmillan MBR Tooley stock with decelerator pad and pillar bedded. Talley rings and bases, Nightforce NXS 8-32x56 with the R2 reticle,....all this and only 15.5lbs[:0][:D]

    The RUM recoil pushing a 216gr Clinch River at almost 3200fps over some Retumbo even in that rig still let's you know you lit a primer[8D] but is quite manageable. The 7mm rem mag sendero with the factory 150's and 160's is a sweetheart to shoot from the bench. I would have no problem running 3-4 boxes through it if I could keep the barrel cool and needed to shoot that many times in one day. The sendero rifles, especially if you add a break,...make you able to handle some calibers that you weren't able to before. The 1000yd Light gun (300rum) is in a whole different category and for the sake of most folks needs is wayyyyy tooo big and heavy unless they hunt LR from a bench (which I do on crop permits) or shoot in the 1000yd LG class (weight limit 17lbs). The RUM is quite an impressive little number for plains game. I have worked with the 7mmRUM, 300RUM and a little with the 338RUM (back at the gunsmith for extractor problems) and all of them have been super performers and accuracy is a given.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
