Blackpowder clean-up
Shot 4 rounds through my .50 cal inline, and spent more than 2 hours cleaning it. I used sabot solvent, oil, peroxide, rags, patches, bore brushes, breech brushes, toothbrush, and a couple dozen q-tips.
Does anyone have a better way to do this, especially around the breech, because it took at least an hour, and still isn't completely clean? I love shooting it, but I hate spending two hours on one gun while the others need attention. All help is appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. as soon as the Pyrodex runs out, I'm buying Triple 7, so that's a given.

Hot soapy water, correct dia. bore brushes is all you need. You're wasting your time, trying spitshine it, ( it's just a coal burner ). Oil it good after you get finished cleaning it. Obsessive-compulsive folks should consider other hobbies.

First make certain She Who Must Be Obeyed is nowhere in sight.
Remove barrel, remove nipple, (breachplug if easy) & run water in bathtub til HOT & then run HOT water down barrel until it comes out clean. Barrel should be so hot water will evaporate. Then run patchs
with non-petroleum based cleaner. (For black powder, newer replacement powders can use regular lubricants.)
Clean bathtub.0 -
You can also use a 3# coffee can or other similar container,use a tight fitting patch and pump the hot soapy water up and down the barrel (Saves cleaning the tub and can be done outdoors) Rinse-dry-oil while barrel is still hot. Emery

Like the gentlemen said...Soap and Warm Water...I Always used a Section of IV Tube......One End in the Bucket or Coffee Can of Soapy Water and the other end on the Percussion Nipple...Works like a Water Pump or an Oil Well Pump...After the Bore is Clean....Run Patches till the Bore is Dry and then lightly Oil.....Its worked for me for over 50 years.....

I get my '53 Enfield clean by using the tubing/coffee can system. After the barrel is clean, I pour a large amount of hot water down it and through the nipple.
Then, clean it using Hoppe's black powder cleaner. A good thing to do also is to take out the nipple, and using a pipe cleaner soaked in Hoppe's, clean out the hole going into the barrel.
Finally, I run a patch coated in Bore Butter down the barrel to 'cure' the barrel.
One of my hobbies is Civil War Reenacting. During 'battles' we sometimes fire 60+ rounds of blanks, all using oldtime black powder. I've never spent more than 30 minutes cleaning my musket.

After the hot soapy scrub,wrap a rag around the barrel and pour boiling water down it.It will quickly dry but be very hot,while it is hot run a patch with Bore Butter or any natural lube down the bore and smear some on all metal parts.Never use petroleum base oil or grease on a black powder gun because it kills accuracy until it gets burned out and makes it hell to clean. 0 -
I use equal parts of rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and Murphy's Oil Soap. Mix together and store in an opaque container. This stuff cleans blackpowder guns great. Be sure to relube with a quality product after. I use TC BoreButter. 0 -
Hot,soapy water is definetly the way to go. I use Dawn dishwashing liquid on my cap and ball revolvers. Just make sure you rinse and dry it good. When i'm in a hurry I use my wife's hairdryer. (If you do this, make sure your wife is not home!) 0
