Is there any way to compare metric to U.S. I have a rifle in 8X58.5 what is that close to, & could it be re-bored to a commen cal. if you have a answer please e-mail davidh@ecenet.com Thanks

    Hello The first thing you need to tell us is what type of gun this is on . Some metric cartridges are for low pressure most of these are in older drillings and you can get into trouble in rechambering on a larger high pressure cartridge.This said there were quiet a few 8MM Mausers bolt guns rechambered to 8X60 and used 30/06 cases after WW II but it would still be a handload job as I dont know of any factory ammo . you might try old western scrounger for the ammo to fit your gun.

    I don't really understand what caliber you are referring to when you state it is 8x58.5. What type of rifle do you have and when was it made?

    The 8mm Mauser is obviously close but its complete designation is really 7.92x57mm but is sometimes show as 8x57mm. If your rifle is of about 1888 vintage, it would use a .318 inch diameter bullet. But if your rifle is vintage about 1905, then the bullet will be about .323 inch diameter.

    There is also a 8x60mm Mauser, an 8x60 Rubin, and 8x59 Breda.

    If the gun is a Sauer or a Danish Krag, you would degrade a valuable gun for the convenience of finding available ammunition. For the cost of conversion you can make ammunition for the gun and retain its collector value and historical significance.
    The Sauer is similar to the .32-40 and the Krag is similar to the American Krag, but more powerful. Brass for them both is available from Buffalo.

    I don't have much for references on metric cartridges, but the closest thing I can find is the 8x59 Italian Breda, which was a MG chambering in WW2. I think perry shooter's key point is crucial - we need to know what sort of rifle is involved. From there, someone may be able to determine the original chambering and which, if any alternative chamberings might be useful.

    8x58R Dannish Krag
    Would both be close to your 8x58.5 dimention for the case length. Time for A) a better discription of the rifle, B) a chamber cast and dimentions.
    Conversion to another chambering is probably not practical (or recogmended), but reloading to the origional chambering is.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
