X.L.shot gun pat. 1885 44o.c.? smooth bore

This gun has a low wall look falling block type. And it has a cracked stock.It says X.L. shot gun 44 o.c. pat 1885.[ single barrel]. Is this a browning design or a early win? Or is it a win.patent 1885 store gun???? Is X.L. a brand of gun manufacture. Any body out there that know?

    Believe that Hopkins & Allen was the manufacturer. "XL" was a trade name that H & A used on their firearms. It's more commonly seen on their "Suicide Specials", i.e. inexpensive handguns.

    The patent date for the John M. Browning designed Winchester Single-shot is October 7th, 1879. I agree with Rufe-snow's bilef that what you have is a Hopkins & Allen made firearm.
